Historia
In contrast to the oppressive Roman military occupation of the first century, Crossan examines the meaning of the non-violent Kingdom of God prophesized by Jesus and the equality advocated by Paul to the early Christian churches. Crossan contrasts these messages of peace with the misinterpreted apocalyptic vision from the Book of Revelation, which has been misrepresented by modern right-wing theologians and televangelists to justify US military actions in the Middle East.

Historia
Countless people are losing their faith in God, Jesus, Church, and Christianity. Many feel deeply damaged and led astray by their experiences within church and the Christian faith. The duplicity, the judgementalism, the allegiance to politics, and the bullying of the vulnerable and the different have isolated many. Every Sunday, it seems, there is a new chorus of condemnation, shame, and religious elitism. God is portrayed as a hating, violent, temperamental, murderous, codependent, and exclusive deity. The Christian faith is pimped as a performance-driven, privileged-laden, fear-focused, ...

Pretty angry rant at conservative Christianity.
Revisado: 08-21-24
Narrated by AI… why? This was spoiled so many times by the narration that couldn’t correctly identify what the word actually was because of letters mixed with other characters like F&@k.. which happened A LOT. I did laugh a few times at the absolute stripping down of modern evangelicals. There were so many important, spot on observations that were just shrouded in so much anger that they’d never fly outside of appealing to an already angry group who’ve experienced church trauma. Sure be angry. You should be… but if you want people to consider that they’re actually “tickling the nipples of Satan” then you’d need to tone it down some. Theologically, and also logically there were quite a few inconsistencies within the ‘be who you are, don’t let anyone tell you that you need to change’ language. I liked a lot about the book but sadly disliked just as much. For someone looking to salvage my own faith this book was no help. It was just the left version of the right… which in essence is still fundamentalism of a different name.

There is this great difference between the works of men and the works of God, that the same minute and searching investigation, which displays the defects and imperfections of the one, brings out also the beauties of the other. If the most finely polished needle on which the art of man has been expended be subjected to a microscope, many inequalities, much roughness and clumsiness, will be seen. But if the microscope be brought to bear on the flowers of the field, no such result appears.

Revisado: 05-23-24
Fascinating review tracing the steps of ancient mythology right in through the back door of Christianity. What Hislop sees as Papal heresy of the highest degree is, in my opinion, just a synchronicity and cultural/ theological homeostasis. It was well worth the listen.

Bible Nation tells the story of the Greens' rapid acquisition of an unparalleled collection of biblical antiquities; their creation of a closely controlled group of scholars to study and promote their collection; their efforts to place a Bible curriculum in public schools; and their construction of a $500 million Museum of the Bible near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Bible Nation reveals how these seemingly disparate initiatives promote a very particular set of beliefs about the Bible - and raise serious ethical questions.

Not particularly surprised that corporate money is used for personal religious agenda. Moss and Baden do a thorough job of dissecting the Green families agenda with their foray into “biblical education” Def informative and a good listen.

Revisado: 04-15-24
Incredibly long and yawn worthy collection of ancient books. I love history of 2nd temple Judaism and early Christianity so I was able to muscle my way through this tome. I can’t say I’d recommend this book but it certainly helps fill out the historical perspective or traditions that were held both before and after Jesus. Some are genuinely interesting, whilst some are down right weird as all get out (Enoch and Gnostic stuff especially). Too bad our churches don’t educate us in the very rich 2000yr history of the movement because it really does help fill in many of the doctrinal/ cultural/ social gaps that we have no idea of. Let’s just say that Jesus wasn’t born in a vacuum and neither was Christianity. Everything has a backstory and this book is part of that.

The Deconstruction of Christianity

Historia
A movement called ‘deconstruction’ is sweeping through our churches and it is affecting our loved ones. It has disrupted, dismantled, and destroyed the faith of so many, and this book can help you not only understand what’s happening but also stand your ground and respond with clarity and confidence. In this seminal book, Alisa Childers, author of Another Gospel?, and Tim Barnett, creator of Red Pen Logic, will help you understand what deconstruction is, where it comes from, why it is compelling to some, and how it disorients the lives of so many.

Getting better
Revisado: 03-29-24
Childers shows a little more humility and sensitivity in this book than she did in her other book, Another Gospel. I now feel I could actually hang out with her, have a laugh and talk theology, history and ideas. Although I’m still not convinced by the main argument of one’s sole authority relying on “inspired” scripture when it is on our interpretation of that scripture by which we actually live and love… or not! I do agree with some important points she makes regarding having some kind of foundation for our world view. If we have no home plate then faith is just an open field. Not all who are deconstructing are looking to be atheist. Some, like me still want to follow the teachings of Jesus and have a deep love for God. Barnett didn’t add much to the conversation IMO, especially the death bed conversion of his grandpa. To think that the gospel is reduced to just saying or affirming “yes” so one can get into eternal life is a bizarre belief to hold. I was mostly encouraged to hear that when Childers attends church she sits in the back and watches. She’s been burned by the very fire she’s inviting people to warm their hands on so beware. Never stop asking questions. We both agree on that point for sure.

Historia
Alisa Childers never thought she would question her Christian faith. She was raised in a Christian home, where she had seen her mom and dad feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, and love the outcast. She had witnessed God at work and then had dedicated her own life to leading worship as part of the popular Christian band ZOEgirl. All that was deeply challenged when she met a progressive pastor who called himself a hopeful agnostic. Another Gospel? describes the intellectual journey Alisa took over several years as she wrestled with a series of questions.

Well written. Nicely narrated. Easy listen.
Revisado: 03-27-24
Childers just digs her heels in deeper without actually bothering to answer the real questions that “progressive Christianity” has. She claims that her faith is different and she walks with a limp now. Really nothing has changed and she’s only limping because she broke her ankle on bad theology (just because it’s old doesn’t make it good) and didn’t bother to get it looked at. I’ve read church history, church fathers, apologetics out the wazoo and her arguments still don’t help. 🤷🏻♂️

Historia
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Historia
This book invites you to look behind the metaphors and symbolic language, and consider the underlying perspectives that the Bible itself provides about the death of Christ. It extracts an exciting idea: that the death of Jesus was never about a transaction taking place in heaven with God, but rather that it was intended to have a very real impact on each one of us. It was intended to change us, not God!

A MUST READ.
Revisado: 06-08-23
John Launchbury leads his readers through a logical, compelling and thoughtful exploration of atonement theology. His peaceful Biblical examination is full of the humility and hopefulness in God’s grace one would expect from such a topic.
Tom Peel does a brilliant narration demonstrating a clear understating of Biblical names, places and theological concepts, something that shouldn’t be taken for granted from an audio platform.
