Historia
Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Great Exposition of “Post-Racial” America
Revisado: 11-24-20
Alexander exposes how our criminal justice system in conjunction with the war on the drugs is used as a phantom racial order. In the wake of Police killings and other crimes committed against blacks, it’s important to understand the framework of these incidents. Alexander does that through showing how it operates in the shadows and how colorblindness stifles activism to challenge this system. While I do not agree with the moral conclusion that colorblindness will likely never be possible, I do believe radical change is necessary to bring down this system.

Bullied to Death: A Story of Bullying, Social Media, and the Suicide of Sherokee Harriman

Historia
On September 5, 2015, 14-year-old Sherokee Harriman drove a kitchen knife into her stomach as other teens watched in horror. Despite attempts to save her, the girl died, and the coroner ruled it a "suicide". But was it? Or was it a crime perpetuated by other teens who had bullied her? Sherokee's short life and tragic death created a national media and social media frenzy, much of it centered on sensationalism rather than the truth. Meanwhile in LaVergne, the community sought answers to questions about who, if anyone, should be held criminally responsible for "bullying".

The tragic death of Sherokee Harriman reveals the miscarriage of justice that is our schools handling of bullying. The fact these programs teach you to “stand up for yourself” yet punish you when you do. Keep Sherokee memory alive and fight this system.

Historia
Elliot Rodger considered himself to be intelligent, refined, handsome, fashionable, and charming. He spent years trying to be cool so women would like him. He thought if he just wore expensive and fashionable clothing, had a better car, or if he were rich, then women would throw themselves at him. In fact, he thought himself to be “The Supreme Gentleman”.

Could have been better.
Revisado: 10-02-20
I expected Whitney to fill in more of the gaps between Rodger’s Manifesto and his thinking as well those around him. It’s mostly just a rehash of the manifesto itself. It skips over much detail. In addition (aside from discussing his impact on future incel killers) Whitney doesn’t go much into the aftermath. Nothing on how the victims families or the UCSB community moved afterwards. But he does add some analysis for understanding Rodger which redeems this book.

In this sweeping novel, James A. Michener chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age.

Great HF Guide to Poland
Revisado: 09-06-20
Michener uses the backdrop of HF to help understand Polish History. You will fully understand Poland’s history as a constant cycle of Rise and Fall. It covers Mongol invasions to Solidarity movement.
I wonder how it would be continued after 1981.

Historia
For over a generation, shocking cases of censorship at America's colleges and universities have taught students the wrong lessons about living in a free society. Drawing on a decade of experience battling for freedom of speech on campus, First Amendment lawyer Greg Lukianoff reveals how higher education fails to teach students to become critical thinkers: by stifling open debate, our campuses are supercharging ideological divisions, promoting groupthink, and encouraging an unscholarly certainty about complex issues.

Historia
If you were taught that the Middle Ages were a time of intellectual stagnation, superstition, and ignorance, you were taught a myth that has been utterly refuted by modern scholarship. As a physicist and historian of science James Hannam shows in his brilliant new book, The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution, without the scholarship of the "barbaric" Middle Ages, modern science simply would not exist. The Middle Ages were a time of one intellectual triumph after another.
