Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

As Good As Expected
Revisado: 10-20-23
Ever since my introduction to Deacon King Kong, I’ve been a McBride fan. I’ve loved all that I’ve read of his thus far; have come to each new book with the highest expectations; and this work did not disappoint!

Historia
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Lord Bird, winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction, Deacon King Kong, and Five-Carat Soul, Kill ’Em and Leave is more than a book about James Brown. Brown embodied the contradictions of American life: He was an unsettling symbol of the tensions between North and South, Black and White, rich and poor. After receiving a tip that promises to uncover the man behind the myth, James McBride goes in search of the “real” James Brown.

A History Lesson
Revisado: 02-28-23
I enjoyed this book! I really appreciate the contrasts given between the popular movie of Mr. Brown’s life with how he really was in the real life situations. McBride does not sugarcoat or defend, but presents information in a palatable form, allowing for sympathy if you’re so inclined, but just as well if you’re not.

Tyler Merritt's video "Before You Call the Cops" has been viewed millions of times. He's appeared on Jimmy Kimmel and Sports Illustrated and has been profiled in the New York Times. The viral video's main point - the more you know someone, the more empathy, understanding, and compassion you have for that person - is the springboard for this book. By sharing his highs and exposing his lows, Tyler welcomes us into his world in order to help bridge the divides that seem to grow wider every day.

Audio Version Is A Must-Have
Revisado: 02-19-23
Some books are just better in the audio version and this is one of them. Tyler Merritt converses with the reader in a way that makes you believe he’s right there I. The room with you. It felt like a pleasant visit with a new friend. I laughed a lot, smiled a lot, and learned a lot, Thus book will be with me for a while and I’m happy about that fact.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

The Lists Were Correct!
Revisado: 01-07-23
I found this title on several “suggested reading” lists, and I’m glad I followed the suggestions. I love reading about families (especially with cultural diversity), and with a little mystery in the mix, I’m happy. It was a pleasant read and a good way to start this year of reading.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

A Delightful Read
Revisado: 07-15-21
I hesitated to read this book: wasn’t sure if I could deal with the many nicknames of the characters, etc. I wish I hadn’t waited so long. The novel had everything that I enjoy in a book: a little history, mixed with love, mystery, murder, and a few laughs here and there, culminating with an end that made me smile. I absolutely loved it.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

One of the Best!
Revisado: 04-24-21
Simply put, this is one of the best books that I’ve read in a long time. The narration is impeccable, which only adds to the pleasurable path the author leads you on during the presentation of the story.

Historia
The Butler family has had their share of trials - as sisters Althea, Viola, and Lillian can attest - but nothing prepared them for the literal trial that will upend their lives. Althea, the eldest sister and substitute matriarch, is a force to be reckoned with, and her younger sisters have alternately appreciated and chafed at her strong will. They are as stunned as the rest of the small community when she and her husband, Proctor, are arrested, and in a heartbeat, the family goes from one of the most respected in town to utter disgrace.

Issues Without Answers
Revisado: 05-06-19
If you like a warm fuzzy feeling at the end of a book about families with deep issues, this book will probably disappoint you. Numerous important issues are presented throughout, but just like real life, the characters make adjustments and life goes on. As another reviewer opined, there's plenty here for book club conversations; however, if happy endings are what you desire, you'll have to come up with those on your own. Overall, a good book with great narrators.

Historia
Nel and Sula's devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

Disturbingly Wonderful
Revisado: 08-04-18
A beautifully written, dark story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I laughed at times, but more often, I heard myself saying, “hmph,” while shaking my head. It reminds me of another of her works, “Love.” These characters will stay with me for quite a while, haunting, but welcome reminders of a great novel.

Historia
For the newly freed black residents of Colfax, Louisiana, the beginning of reconstruction promised them the right to vote, own property, and, at last, control their own lives. But in the space of a day, angry whites would take back Colfax in one of the deadliest incidents of racial violence in Southern history. In the bitter aftermath, the Tademys and the Smiths will have to deal with the wreckage, push on, and build a better life for their sons and daughters over the next 70 years.

I would suggest this book to any African American who for whatever reason remains ambivalent about the importance of education and voting. I read Cane River first and they were both eye opening and dramatic reads.
