As a big fan of Circe and Song of Achilles, needless to say, my decades-long love of The Odyssey & the Greek Myths, there is not a single aspect of this book I can take exception to. An exceptional scholar and writer, Haynes' wit and irony abound in this far-from-dry reclaiming of some of the most famous women in Greek mythology. And she is a superb narrator. To think I've only just discovered her! More audio books await!

The previous readers of this series gave us a Thomas Cromwell who was a calm, calculating, witty, urbane man marked by no tell tail class accent. A well learned lawyer who is fit to deal with princes, as Chapuys reminds him. Ben Miles decision to give him a Putney Accent (?), if it's even that, rings hollow and destroys the character. I'm sending this back - I suggest you get Simon Vance back to redo this book.

A look into the seedier side of life and the difficulties of adjusting to society when you've spent half your life in prison, this is a ripping good true crime story. I can't believe I've waited this long to read it. My only complaint is that Audible Editors should make sure the reader pronounces names correctly - My Lai is pronounced Mee Lie and Geraldo Rivera isn't pronounced with a hard G. Small details but enough to pop one out of the story. Luckily, Mailer's prose sucks you right back in.

Making of a Political Consultant & Life w/Obama

Revisado: 07-21-18

One of the first books to come out on the Obama Administration, this political masterpiece is frank, witty and heartbreaking. Expertly written, Axe takes you through his early interest in politics to his life as a political reporter in Chicago, through his years as Chief Strategist for Obama's Campaigns and his years as Chief Advisor to the President.

Best of all, he reads the book himself. His wry and self-deprecating delivery are one of the delights of the book.

The only drawback is sometimes it reads like it's a bit of a hagiography of Obama, which wasn't apparent when the work was first published. Along with Ben Rhodes' "The World As It Is" and Dan Pfieffer's "Yes, We (Still) Can," any reader of modern politics will get a more fully rounded view of Barack Obama and the hopeful dreamers of the Obama White House, which, willl go down as one of our best presidencies.

Truer Words Were Never Spoken - "Trust Your Gut"

Revisado: 05-04-17

Would you consider the audio edition of Gut to be better than the print version?

I've never read the print edition, but I wouldn't hesitate to give it as a gift! I've listened to it three times already and can tell it'll be one of my favorites.

What did you like best about this story?

Unraveling the mysteries of the intestinal track is absorbing listening. I never realized how important the healthy flora and fauna of our gut cultures affects our overall health - from weight control to diabetes and other diseases. It lays out the perfect argument why eating good. fresh plain food is the best way to go and cutting back on the prepackaged and take-away stuff is better in the long run!

Which character – as performed by Katy Sobey – was your favorite?

The small intestine - such a quirky community of go-get, let's keep this body healthy do-gooders. What's not to like?

Any additional comments?

A terrific gift for the budding biologists, nurses, doctors, and nutritionists, among us! If you go the Audible route, the narrator is light-hearted and engaging. Not a preachy book. Just good old fashioned fun for the intellectually curious!

What did you love best about The Outrun?

The narrator's recovery among her native Orkney islands. She made recovery a combo of hard work, being one with nature, and the healing power of the sea

What did you like best about this story?

It didn't grab me from the first - her alcoholism and downward spiral were dull and uninspiring. She told me nothing new. But her return home really picked up the pacing of the book. Counting the birds was terrific.

Which character – as performed by Tracy Wiles – was your favorite?

The narrator of course.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

Life on the Orkneys. I may visit.

Audio Sample Should Be From The READER

Revisado: 01-05-17

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

NO! The Audio Sample is from the Author's foreward and read by the author, who has a terrific voice. The rest of the book is read by a Reader whose performance has all the brilliance of Joe Friday's "Just the facts" delivery.

What other book might you compare Pirate Hunters to and why?

Any other book with a bad, lackluster, non-nuanced reader.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ray Porter?

The Author. Really, he has a mellifluous voice. He should do his own recordings. Otherwise this is no better than an Audible Bait and Switch.

Revisado: 12-13-16

Would you consider the audio edition of The Black Banners to be better than the print version?

The Audio edition is excellent, but the books are always better. I have both!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Black Banners?

Soufan's treatment of prisoners - he doesn't believe in torture and makes an excellent case as to why it doesn't work.

Which scene was your favorite?

Too many to mention. But the amount of the book that was censored by the CIA is astounding and they're the ones who believed in torture.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

John O'Neil's death in the collapse of the World Trade Center is heart wrenching, as is Soufan's account of growing up in war ravaged Beirut and his love for this country.

Any additional comments?

Soufan writes that when people ask him what's the best way to defeat al Queda, he replies, "Knowledge." This book shows Soufan not only practices that line of thought, it also allows the listener/reader to absorb the who, what, why, where, and how, of jihadist thought.
