It was very interesting to learn what the job of a CSI is really like. I found the whole book fascinating.

A painful book because the marital relationship was so poor it was frustrating to witness.

I never liked any character in the story. I was glad to reach the end of it so I could go on to something hopefully more satisfying to read about.

I liked the references to faith in God, to prayer, and to the way people’s hearts can be changed. The ending was unexpected but appropriate. I was deeply moved. I can forgive the lack of the human voice in the narration.

I’m not a fan of westerns, but bought the audio of this one, loved it, and, by golly, I just may become one. Very satisfying in all respects.

Not the best narrator? Get over it.
Revisado: 01-12-22
In this age when people can claim “my truth” in lieu of objective truth, it is easy to understand why this author had difficulty getting this published. It contradicts the “woke” narrative. That is precisely why listeners should realize that perhaps the producers couldn’t get the “big names” in audio books to undertake it. Listen to it because it’s true, makes sense and explains what is really happening in this messed up world.

Award-winning author William Kent Krueger has gained an immense fan base for his Cork O’Connor series. In Ordinary Grace, Krueger looks back to 1961 to tell the story of Frank Drum, a boy on the cusp of manhood. A typical 13-year-old with a strong, loving family, Frank is devastated when a tragedy forces him to face the unthinkable - and to take on a maturity beyond his years.

Fiction, but sounds autobiographical
Revisado: 11-18-15
If you could sum up Ordinary Grace in three words, what would they be?
Believable characters; inspirational
What did you like best about this story?
I was pleasantly surprised to discover the story centered on a Methodist minister's family in the 1960's, because I myself grew up in such a family about that time. I knew people just like those portrayed in the book, and the events involving them were so realistic they could have actually happened. Motivations of the characters involved were believable, and the resolution of the plot was consistent with those characters. I felt like I knew the Drum family personally and was, therefore, invested with them in their tragedy and the hope for grace to overcome it.
Which scene was your favorite?
I was greatly moved by the pastor's sermon. For one so profoundly grieving to even still believe in the grace of God and find anything positive to say was a very emotional, heart-wrenching moment.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I can't remember the last time a book actually brought me to tears, but this one did twice--the first time during the aforementioned sermon following the tragic death, and the second time in the last chapter in which the retired Reverend and his two sons remembered and honored those whose lives were affected by the events that took place those many years earlier. It was a bitter-sweet resolution, sad but triumphant, bearing evidence of both awe-full and ordinary grace.
Any additional comments?
This was the first book I've read by William Kent Krueger, but it will definitely NOT be the last. In fact, I've already purchased another.

Historia
On a windy hilltop in the town of Redemption, Arizona, people have gathered at an old cemetery to bury a local man who died in a tragic accident. But the occasion is suddenly disrupted by a thunderous explosion several miles away. A plane has crashed, pouring a pillar of black smoke into the air. As Sheriff Garth Morgan speeds toward the accident, he nearly hits a man running down the road, with no shoes on his feet and no memory of who he is or how he got there.

My first review; unfortunately it's a negative one
Revisado: 10-09-15
What would have made The Searcher better?
Leave out the hokey pseudo-religious stuff and the "spirit world" stuff and make the story at least plausible. The author leaves the reader hanging at the end. The big question that leads you to keep slogging through the novel is the expectation that you'll find out who the main character IS, why he showed up in the first place, how he got there, etc. This is the most unsatisfying story I've experienced in quite some time.
Would you ever listen to anything by Simon Toyne again?
No. I'll remember his name and avoid anything else he has written or will write.
Did Joseph Balderrama do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The only redeeming feature of this listening experience is that the reader did a good job with a poor story. He changed voices and/or accents for the different characters, although I think his Mexican characters were overly stereotyped. I would definitely choose this reader again--unless he consistently chooses to read weird, hokey novels.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Several times I almost quit listening to it, intending to request a refund from Audible, but I kept listening to the end, always thinking there MIGHT be some redeeming qualities, thinking the ending, at least, might be satisfying. It wasn't. I'd say the only redeeming quality was the talent of the reader. Too bad he wasted it on this particular novel.
