Acerca de esta escucha

It is said that a man is grown by his past, and so it was with William Brewer. Before he took command of HMS Defiant in a hurricane and before he hunted pirates in HMS Revenge, Brewer endured a crucible of fire that molded him into the legend he became.

Fresh from the tutelage of Napoleon Bonaparte on St. Helena, Brewer signs on for a cruise under Captain Bush in HMS Lydia to the Mediterranean to battle the Barbary Pirates. Here, Brewer learns to fight, but he also learns what it means to command men in battle and what it takes to order men to their deaths.

Their enemy is a Scottish renegade who is responsible for the deaths of dozens of his fellow sailors over the years and the selling of hundreds of Europeans into African slavery. Along the way, Brewer is introduced to new heroes and new devils. He also receives sage advice from no less than the Duke of Wellington himself. In the end, Brewer has to use all he’s learned - not to mention going beyond all that - to save HMS Lydia from total destruction at the hands of pirates.

I have never really read or listened to books dealing with Nautical information and this story informed me of a lot of things I was not aware of. This is a page Turner type of book and I enjoyed it. Narrator does a good job with the characters and entire storyline.

This audio story was most enjoyable. The background sounds makes it seem real. Listen to this if you enjoy sea stories.

Very good for the naval age of sail. In Hornblower tradition . Cannot say enough. Super.

Brewer and the Barbary Pirates.
A cracking tale of life aboard a royal navy frigate fighting north African pirates.
Gripping and action packed.
Superb narration, could feel yourself in the wardroom .
I received a free copy of this audio book at my own request and happily leave my honest review.

This was a fun book out of the Hornblower series. Prequel if you will. With that said the book completes its mission. Fun book

This was another excellent tale of Mr Brewer,Mr Hurst and Horatio Hornblower.Mr Hornblower takes them home to meet his family and talk some business. It is a tale of ships rescued and lost, battles lost and won. Very exciting. Mr Nigel Peever was once again a wonderful narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I enjoyed the first two books from this series as I’m well familiar with the Hornblower series. This book is fine but they make Bush rather stupid which was inconsistent with the Hornblower series. This is definitely my least favorite of the series so far. Also, the voice for Jerard is poorly chosen.

I've stuck around for 3 books but can't go any further. This is not Hornblower or even close to the quality that the original Hornblower novels had, Outside of a commander who seems to have the worst luck in the world to account for an abysmal showings in battle but the writer seems to have a mancrush on Napoleon. From Hornblower's child calling Napoleon his 'uncle' to every third sentence referring to the man, it is Bonaparte this and Bonaparte that..."Our friend" Bonaparte.

Write seems to be a Bonapartist
