The thing that I dislike about this is the fact that the readers voices do not match the gender of the characters. Meaning a male voice would be so much better for the male characters. It’s difficult to overlook that the voices don’t match gender. Just my thoughts. I still love this author.

Just an FYI - this book has been edited to appeal to today’s readers. Seems we cannot be trusted to interpret original material with regard to its publication era- maybe even learn from it. Too bad. The author passed away in 2007, its unknown if she herself approved these changes. Loved that Rosalyn Landor once again delivered a 5 star narration performance! And despite revisions, the storytelling from KEW was strong… however, original text is always preferable.

Mrs, Woodiwiess just couldn’t write enough books for my desire. I miss the long development that just isn’t matched with writers today.

Best listened to at 1.15x. i didn't really care for the narrator. I had trouble getting into this book unlike Woodiwiss's other books which I got into right away.

Hard to get into

Other Woodiwiss books draw me in from the first paragraph. This book isn’t a favorite. I found myself drifting off and thinking about other things while listening. I didn’t feel a need to re-listen to the parts I zoned out on. Didn’t seem like I missed anything. The descriptions aren’t adequate. I can’t see anything nor place myself in the frame. The dialogue is tedious. The character development doesn’t evolve. There seems to be zero chemistry between the lovers. The hero isn’t handsome, only well built. I’m not sure the author was very knowledgeable about the period in Russia. Dear sweet Rosalyn narrates as best she can, but I get the feeling she thinks this is a hot mess.
