Acerca de esta escucha

This volume opens with Mohandas Gandhi's arrival in Bombay in January 1915 and takes us through his epic struggles over the next three decades: to deliver India from British rule, to forge harmonious relations between India's Hindu and Muslim populations, to end the pernicious Hindu practice of untouchability, and to develop India's economic and moral self-reliance. We discover how in each of these campaigns, Gandhi adapted methods of nonviolence - strikes, marches, fasts - that successfully challenged British authority, religious orthodoxy, social customs, and would influence nonviolent, revolutionary movements throughout the world.

In reconstructing Gandhi's life and work, Ramachandra Guha has drawn on 60 different archival collections, the most significant among them, a previously unavailable collection of papers belonging to Gandhi himself. Using this wealth of material, Guha creates a portrait of Gandhi and of those closest to him - family, friends, political and social leaders - that illuminates the complexity inside his thinking, his motives, his actions, and their outcomes as he engaged with every important aspect of social and public life in the India of his time.

As I titled this review it truly is a must read for those interested in history.
A book about Gandhi has been on my “to listen to” list for a long time.
I am glad I waited, so this most excellent book by Ramachandra Guha became available.
I won’t go into details of the book. It is up to you to find out.
The one thing I do want to mention is Winston Churchill in regards to his judgment of Gandhi, driven by his racist feelings, while many world renowned figures send notices of condolences after his tragic murder, there was no acknowledgement of it by Churchill.
I had noticed this before from reading “ Churchill and Gandhi”
Pitiful, coming from a person who played an important role in history, but I guess he too was a product of his environment, having racial prejudices.
The narrator Derek Perkins as always is a pleasure to listen to.
My thanks to all involved, JK.

if somebody like Einstein would have this guy's picture up on the wall it's worth the time to try to understand who he was and what he was about it's worthwhile it's something we should learn when we're much younger not wait till we're 68 or 69 years old to read about or listen to good luck with it stick to it don't let it push you away

this was a great and very detailed book with only minimal bias, however a lot of the words used were not English and make it hard to fallow at time, most if the time I figured it out via context but not as always.

a lot for a simple country boy

Should be required reading for anyone making a comment about Gandhi. Especially those who think negatively of him. We could all learn a ton from him.

Remarkable Depth

For a work to educate on the efforts of Ghandi and the changing of India during his time, it is excellent. It is balanced and academic, not partial to modern political issues.

Balanced view of his last half of his life

This was my first ever read of the bibliography of Gandhi ji. The book does justice with the stature of the the man and presents very well researched and written account of his life and those of around him. His wife’s story and companionship is also very heart touching. An excellent read

Well researched and heart touching

I really enjoyed discovering Gandhi's role in freedom of India! the narrator should have done a better job at pronouncing indian names and words. some time I had to wait for English meaning because the pronunciations were that bad.

great content!
