Acerca de esta escucha

It is 1758, and the Seven Years War is at its height. The Duke of Cumberland’s Hanoverian army has been pushed back to the river Elbe while the French are using the medieval fortified city of Emden to resupply their army and to anchor its left flank.

George Holbrooke has recently returned from the Jamaica Station in command of a sloop-of-war. He is under orders to survey and blockade the approaches to Emden in advance of the arrival of a British squadron. The French garrison and their Austrian allies are nervous. With their supply line cut, they are in danger of being isolated when the French army is forced to retreat in the face of the new Prussian-led army that is gathering on the Elbe. Can the French be bluffed out of Emden? Is this Holbrooke’s flood tide that will lead to his next promotion?

Holbrooke’s Tide is the fourth of the Carlisle and Holbrooke naval adventures. The series follows the exploits of the two men through the Seven Years War and into the period of turbulent relations between Britain and her American colonies in the 1760s.

Having read O'Brien's Master and Commander series several times, it is enjoyable to learn from historical fiction about a previous time period. The author makes a great effort to entertain as well as instruct. In this book, as well as the previous books in the series, I enjoy the author's continual reminder of the financial interests that drive nations to war.
I found a French owned ex-slave living in a French West Indian colony that speaks perfect English quite implausible.

Historical fiction done well

I have been enjoying this series. I miss Patrick O'Brien and his great characters, but this is a nice series as well.

The fourth in this fantastic series does not disappoint. As the characters, the political intrigue, and the drama continue to unfold across the seven years war landscape that backdrops this fantastic series, Chris Durbin‘s continued in-depth historical and maritime research once again rise to the top. As with all of his fine works of historical fiction, inner woven with actual historical figures and battles, you will not be disappointed! Aye!

Chris Durbin does it again!

Swashbuckling tail not to deep into the English Navy. Nice character development and the plot twists and reverses.

Story and history blended in an entertaining presentation.

A good tale well told. The narrator was at times annoying but all in all worth the time.

A good tale

Lousy sea story. Don’t waist your time if you’re looking for an adventure story. Narration was difficult to understand, not because of the nautical terms, but because of the quality of the narration

Historical for dates. Not much of a story.
