Davik of Darkshire is one of the last Magebreakers who survived the Summoner War. In that brutal conflict, expendable conscripts were engraved with runes of resistance and hardiness, turning them into the scourge of warcasters. Using his augmentation to forge a storied career, he has battled through epic adventures, ambushes, and dungeons for the last decade.

After narrowly escaping a treacherous contract, Davik faces a choice: recruit and re-arm or leave his bloodstained past behind. Seeking solace, he heads to Oakshire in the Midlands, hoping to find peace and purpose beyond the burden of his reputation.

In Oakshire, Davik meets a former enemy, the captivating Sariel, a battle-elf turned tavern owner. Taking a job as a hired hand, he immerses himself in the simple, honest work of running a tavern.

With the company of Vorga, a book-loving orc waitress; Karley, a sharp-tongued drow bartender; Tyra, a faen cook with a heart of gold; and Elina, a cleric bent on helping him change, he begins to feel at home.

As Davik navigates his growing feelings for Sariel and the attention of his new coworkers, he finds himself drawn to this new life. Each relationship offers a chance at redemption and connection.

But old scores and dangers have a way of resurfacing, and Davik’s journey of healing is far from over.

Magebreaker is a slice-of-life fantasy tale of redemption, romance, camaraderie, and the quest to find peace.

the poetic punchlines that felt well thought out, and some of the unique vocabulary.
I feel the relationship pacing came on a bit fast, but still rather enjoyable.

while the inconsistency of his strength and his battle iq can be tough to reconcile for me the story the narration and especially that ending were killer and leaves me wanting more

Where to even begin? First off, the plot is just incredible. A war veteran haunted by his past, tries to make a new life with the scars of war. These are always either done incredibly shallow, or in this case, incredibly well. I'm just so impressed. I love the idea behind it. I could go on and on with the plot, but I'm not here to spoil anything. That said, the part that really made me enjoy this. The harem aspect. So as of now, the majority of books out there in this genre are in one of two categories. One is the actual harem, where the women don't sleep with each other and don't date each other, and are only interested in the mc, or the second: the polyamorous route where all the women date each other and the mc tags along as a cuck. This book is the first, and in my opinion, the best. The author has no shame in writing these women to be actual women. They don't want anyone but the mc to be with them, and in my opinion, this makes the book so much better. I dislike the whole polyamory route many "harem" novels are going. Imagine your partner professing their undying love for you, and then immediately giving themselves away to someone who isn't you. That's not sexy, that's not something I would ever strive for. Why would I want a woman who is eager to be with someone who isn't me? But magebreaker doesn't have this problem. And I'm so grateful for it. In fact, I would say that this is up there as one of my personal favorites. I really enjoy the builds up to the relationships, I love the world building and the spicy scenes are awesome. Me personally, I don't need the sex scenes to move the plot forward. That argument actually never made sense to me. Sex scenes are just that, sex scenes. They should not be used as a plot device, it just cheapens the intimacy between the characters involved. The pacing is great, with moments of character building, to moments of violence that are awesome. I don't complain. when an MC is op, I actually dislike that mc is a wimp trope. Our MC isn't a nice guy cuck soy boy. He is a hardened war veteran trying to find peace in his life. And the author nails it perfectly. I mean you really for the guy. His growth is well done, and the author provoked emotions in me very few authors are capable of doing. I'm just so impressed. I really hope this series continues because it's one of the few good ones out there. The one criticism: the female narrator is good, but not great. I mean it's passable, but her monotone voice sometimes drawled on in an emotional scene, that sort of pulled me out of the world, but she tried, and I respect that. The guy did a great job. All in all, I would say if you're looking for an actual harem novel where the women are straight and the mc isn't a wimp, this is it. I will be following this author if they decide to continue this series which I'm praying he does. I'm just so happy this book exists. It's so good!

A diamond in a sea of mediocrity

It is rare that I find an author of the caliber of Bruce Sentar or Daniel Schinhofen, but I just may have found one in this author. It was a great story from beginning to end. It had glimpses of the past, it had adventure, it had mystery and it had romance.
I truly enjoyed the back stories of each character as they came to life.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Oh, and the narrators were fantastic. I give this book my highest recommendation.

One of the best books I’ve listened to all year

VERY Well Written

I liked that it wasn't fast written and hot garbage, it focused on the story and it had a lot of "meat on the bone" for the storyline. really great main character. Really well written.

Great storyline, really captured emotions.
