Kaitlin

On the surface, my life is a flawless performance.

I stay home, keep the house spotless, and play the role of the devoted wife. It doesn’t matter that behind the curtains, the truth is darker than anyone could imagine. I’ve mastered the art of concealing the bruises, spinning lies to explain the tears, and burying the horrors of what happened behind closed doors.

Until her.

Nora doesn’t just see through my carefully crafted illusion—she shatters it. She awakens something buried deep inside me, something raw, desperate, and hungry for escape.

Being with her is wrong. The feelings she stirs in me are worse. But how can I turn away from the only thing that makes me feel alive?

Nora

The suburbs are supposed to be my quiet refuge, the fresh start I need after the military.

Work at my brother’s tattoo shop. Keep my head down. Follow my therapist’s advice to “reconnect with normalcy.”

It was going perfectly—until Kaitlin knocked on my door.

Her smile is polite, her demeanor warm, but there’s a shadow behind her eyes that pulls me in. I should know better. I should keep my distance. But the more I learn, the more I see the darkness she lives with—the kind of darkness that feels eerily familiar.

I keep telling myself I’m not here to save anyone from monsters anymore. I’m not here to destroy lives. But now that I’ve seen her truth, walking away feels impossible.

Remnants is a very dark sapphic romance novella

When I ARC read this DJ Krimmer novella, I was astounded by how much story and depth of character DJ could fit into novella form. This audiobook elevated the novella into a full-length, fully formed story in my mind as I was listening.

Lucy Rivers portrays Kaitlyn (otherwise known as Katie and Junebug), a woman who has learned to adapt to her role as a doting housewife. She’s a shadow of herself though, and Lucy portrays Kaitlyn with a level of surrender and vulnerability that is filled with despondency. There were many times Lucy’s performance had me paralyzed in fear for Kaitlyn, and I felt the ache alongside her. On the flip side she voices a manipulative James and had me boiling over with anger at his characteristically dominating and aggressive traits.

Rose Dioro is steadfast and stoic as Nora, a paraplegic veteran turned tattooist, who has recently moved in across the street. Rose brought Nora to life exactly how I imagined her as I read the story: she is strong-willed and comfortable in the physical and mental space she inhabits. Nora has a lower toned voice compared to Kaitlyn’s melodic voice, and the contrast is exquisite. Nora is fiercely protective and tries to come to grips with her connection to Kaitlyn, and Rose executes this well in her performance. I really love how Nora allows Kaitlyn to make her own decisions, and discreetly lies in wait for the moment she is needed by Kaitlyn.

This novella was made for audio, especially with Lucy & Rose performing it. I like how Lucy voiced James, and additionally Rose voiced Nora’s brother Sam. The emotional growth of both characters together is heightened so much in audio. If you’ve never read or listened to a sapphic romance, heed the trigger warnings and start with this one. It is a beautiful story of love that finds its way out of dark and despair and into the light. The epilogue fills my heart with such joy.

Rose & Lucy deliver a triumphant HEA

I had the opportunity to read Remnants by DJ Krimmer a few months before I listened to the audiobook, and even then, I was blown away by the story. But nothing could have prepared me for the experience of hearing Nora and Kaitlin’s journey brought to life through the breathtaking narration of Rose Dioro and Lucy Rivers.

Remnants may be a novella, but don’t let its shorter length fool you. DJ has an incredible talent for packing a huge emotional punch into a shorter format. This book is proof that sometimes the most powerful stories don’t need hundreds of pages, they just need authenticity, heart, and characters who feel real.

When we meet Nora, a retired military war survivor, she is still carrying the weight of her past and the strength of someone who has fought for her own survival. She moves in across the street from Kaitlin and her cheating, abusive husband, James. Kaitlin’s story is equally compelling, if not more heartbreaking. She’s spent her entire life repressing her feelings for women, even going as far as being forced to attend conversion camps in an attempt to deny that part of herself. But no matter how hard she tried, those feelings never truly disappeared, they just lay dormant, waiting for someone like Nora to awaken them.

What makes this story so powerful is how real it feels. It’s Nora who falls first, who sees Kaitlin’s pain and knows she deserves so much better. It’s Nora who offers love without conditions, without expectations, and with the kind of unwavering patience that made me fall in love with her as a character. The connection between Nora and Kaitlin is felt quick but deeply, making every glance, every moment of vulnerability, feel real.

Even though I had already read Remnants, listening to the audiobook was a completely new experience. Rose Dioro and Lucy Rivers didn’t just narrate this story, they embodied it. They brought so much emotion, and raw honesty to Nora and Kaitlin ’s voices that I was completely swept away.

What I love most about Remnants is how much truth DJ weaves into it. It’s a story about love, yes, but also about survival, reclaiming the parts of yourself that the world has tried to silence. It’s about finding courage in the face of fear and hope when things seem hopeless.

The emotions it stirred up are ones I’m still processing. Remnants is one of those stories that stays with you long after it’s over. DJ’s writing is absolutely phenomenal, and Rose and Lucy's performances elevated it to something completely unforgettable.

This was my very first sapphic romance and what a way to start!

One of my favorite things about DJ Krimmer’s writing is how grounded and believable everything always feels. Remnants is no exception. My heart was in my throat the entire time for Katie… everything she endured, from the brainwashing to the abuse and gaslighting, was so painfully real and handled with care and authenticity. And then there’s Nora, a war hero living with a disability and carrying her own emotional scars. Watching these two women find solace, safety, and strength in each other was absolutely beautiful.

Now let’s talk about the audiobook because… WOW.
Lucy Rivers and Rose Dioro delivered a performance that was nothing short of phenomenal. Their emotional range is incredible… every sigh, every moment of fear or tenderness, every line delivered with so much nuance that it felt like I was living inside the story. They didn’t just read the characters, they became them. The pain, the longing, the quiet moments of connection it was all there, layered and raw and real.

For a short novella, this story takes you through all the feelings, and the narrators made sure I felt every single one. Absolutely stunning work from start to finish.

Short Story. Heavy Impact.
