Acerca de esta escucha

Joseph Duncan had been convicted of raping and torturing a 14-year-old boy in Tacoma, Washington. On the Internet he proudly boasted of his perversions. But the system turned Duncan loose, and no one would stop him from committing an even more horrifying act.

This time he prepared meticulously. He chose his getaway car. He chose his murder weapon and loaded a video camera. Then, when he saw young Shasta and Dylan Groene playing outside their Idaho home, he struck - killing their mother and her boyfriend, and their older brother...and vanishing into the night with Shasta and Dylan.

Detectives pored over the bloody murder scene. The FBI scrambled to find the children and the abductor. And even when Duncan was finally located, the story was not yet over: Dylan was still missing...and the depth of one man's evil was still coming horribly to light.

This book is based on tragic true events. The book outlined the investigation very well. The book included information about the different family members and the kidnapper/killer. The Dennys customers and waitress are the true heroes of the story. This town did not let these kids disappear into the cracks and be forgotten.

Tragic true story told in great detail.

I hadn't heard of this case before discovering this story, but wow! The author relays the events of the abduction and subsequent investigation with great tact. Engaging enough to keep me listening nonstop, but not filled with unnecessary, gory details. My heart went out to this family that suffered utter devastation. The narrator also does a great job with a clear, crisp voice. Well-done Gary C. King and J. Scott Bennett.

This is a sad, true crime story of murder and child abuse. It tells the story of Joseph Duncan and his long history of child abuse and violence. Highlighting the shortfalls in the system that allows dangerous repeat offenders to be released to once again destroy even more lives. The narrator gave the story life, imparting the horror and desperation Duncan's victims must have suffered with his tone. The author did not sensationalize the story or add further distress to the victim or their families by revealing sordid details. He presented the case in a methodical fashion, treating the victims with compassion and illustrating Duncan's distorted view of life.

Sad true crime story

Where does Stolen in the Night rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rank Stolen in the Night somewhere in the middle of all of the audiobooks that I've ever listened to so far. It kept my interest throughout, though it is more of a factual account rather than a storytelling of the crime. If you like true crime books, then you should enjoy this one. I don't remember this when it happened but it did prompt me to look it up on the Internet while listening.

What other book might you compare Stolen in the Night to and why?

I've read and listened to a lot of true crime books, but I honestly can't think of one that is comparable to Stolen in the Night. Joseph Duncan holds one of the top spots for his total depravity. This book doesn't go into graphic detail of his twisted actions, but will give the reader a clear idea of the heinous acts that he committed.

Have you listened to any of J. Scott Bennett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't think I have listened to any other performances by J. Scott Bennett, but he did a good job narrating. Characters were well done and I could understand him very well. I wouldn't have a problem listening to another of his performances.

If you could give Stolen in the Night a new subtitle, what would it be?

The true story of Joseph Duncan and his final, depraved crime that destroyed a family

Any additional comments?

Again worth mentioning is that this is a very factual audiobook. This is not a story of the crime unfolding. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Interesting look into a terribly twisted crime

I found myself half daydreaming in places and had to go back to listen to a couple of chapters. It's loaded with facts, but I had a hard time following the story from time to time. Not the story I had expected, but good. A little confusing at the end of the story, but luckily, the epilogue helped to complete everything in wrap-up. It's okay, but not a favorite.

Not what I expected, but good facts

Wanted to hear mor about Groene crime and trial. Writer often off on tangent about other legal processes.

A little boring at times

A brilliantly written account of a horrific crime and the wanton depravity of mankind. It should remind us to embrace our families tightly and remain vigilant in their protection, as some fiends desire to destroy those we cherish most.

First rate!
