Monsters don't hide in dark alleys.
They lurk in plain sight, clawing into your soul with cordial smiles. They wear Armani, they drive Cadillacs, they attend fundraising balls... And they rule the city with a merciless fist.
The Familia is a mystery to most, and sitting on its throne is Kage Malvagio. Vile. Sadistic. Painstakingly beautiful.
Some say: Ask for forgiveness, never permission. Kage asks for neither—especially when he gets his hands on me.
I should hate him. I should run at the first chance I get. But how could the devil be so bad when he looks at me like that?
From USA Today bestselling author Kelsey Clayton comes a dark mafia romance filled with pain, betrayal, devastation, and revenge. Suffer in Silence is book one of the Malvagio Mafia Duet and ends on a cliffhanger. This dark romance deals with topics that are not for the faint of heart.

the story had some jumps in it and made it hard to follow at times. it was a bit boring in the middle. the plot dragged. it has potential, hopefully the next book is better

I AINT NEVER bought a second book so fast…I didn’t even wait for my next credit, I bought an extra one while listening to the last few minutes. I only had two small things that I didn’t care for and one issue I took with the enemies to lovers trope, but it didn’t make me dislike the story in any way fr. It was captivating from beginning to end. It’s so refreshing to read something good after so many crappy books in a row.
Real time notes I took while listening:
-
I could cry at how good this is so far. I’ve been being tortured with terrible books back to back and this is SO GOOD. I was hesitant at first because I’m getting tired of mafia romance but this was worth it. Besides a few terrible Russian accents, the voice actors are doing amazing.

There was something that was off I couldn’t pinpoint at first. It’s the same thing that puts me off about a lot of enemies to lovers tropes. Once the seal breaks and the MCs start boinking, it goes too fast from hate f***ing to love making and silly banter. It’s as if the act of sex flips a switch the SUDDENLY change the dynamic between the characters and deepening their relationship to where they *instantly* become very sweet to each other, but nothing is happening (in the audience POV) outside of the bedroom either situationally or via internal monologue that signifies their change of heart or attitude towards the other person. Once the MCs get in bed together, they should still be hate f***ing, to some degree, until some kind of realization of love, passionate conversation, or a series of non sexual encounters that soften them to each other, happens that catalyzes the change from enemies into lovers. Having sex once shouldn’t do that- it’s too fast and unrealistic. That’s not to say the eventual confession of love came at the wrong time- I think that was done perfectly, but it was really gradual slow burn and then it jumped/ switched suddenly, where I felt the graduation within the relationship between the MCs should have continued (Let me be clear, this did not ruin the book for me at all, it’s more of a critique of the trope as a whole).

I just saw that I only have 2 hours left of the book and I already feel like it’s going to end too soon.
-
First gripe: age gap, but it’s not awful I guess. FMC is 21, MMC is 30
-
Second gripe: IS A SPOILER!!! (Kind of) SPOILER WARNING:
-
pregnancy ruins everything for me in these books and her “totally feeling it in there” after POSSIBLY being a week late AND he’s had a vasectomy is very annoying. Nonetheless, I’m actually super pleased with this read and I’ll likely listen to it again and again
Refreshingly and surprisingly GOOD
