Previously, Tora and I worked on a textbook exercise for Australian high school students, where casual Japanese is turned into polite language. This time, I tried doing the same drill with Ojisan.
Having worked at a Japanese company for many years, Ojisan is basically a business conversation expert.

This episode is the final one before Tora takes a break from the podcast. Until he settles into his new life in Malaysia, his father—nicknamed “Ojisan”—will be stepping in as a substitute.

日本語（にほんご）は「です・ます」の丁寧形（ていねいけい）以外（いがい）にも会話（かいわ）の普通形（ふつうけい）、ビジネスで使（つか）う尊敬語（そんけいご）など大体（だいたい）大（おお）きく分（わ）けて３つのスタイルがあり、勉強（べんきょう）しているみなさんにとっては本当（ほんとう）に難（むずか）しい言語（げんご）だと思（おも）います。
今回（こんかい）、またオーストラリアの高校生（こうこうせい）の使（つか）っている教科書（きょうかしょ）から、普通形（ふつうけい）から敬語（けいご）、敬語（けいご）から普通形（ふつうけい）にする、というドリルがあったので、ネイティブがやるとどうなるかやってみました。
特（とく）に普通形（ふつうけい）に関（かん）しては、仲（なか）のいい友達（ともだち）と話（はな）すトーンでやると方言（ほうげん）が出（で）てしまい、メチャクチャになってしまいましたが、愛知（あいち）の人（ひと）はこんな話（はな）し方（かた）をするんだ、と参考（さんこう）にしてください。笑

Japanese has roughly three major styles: the polite desu/masu form, the casual form used in conversation, and honorific language used in business. For learners, it's truly a difficult language to master.
This time, I found a drill in a Japanese textbook used by Australian high school students, where you convert from the casual form to the honorific form and vice versa. We tried doing it ourselves as native speakers to see how it would turn out.
Especially with the casual form, when we used a tone like we’re talking with close friends, our regional dialect came out and things got pretty messy—but please take it as a fun reference of how people from Aichi might speak! 😄

オーストラリアの生徒（せいと）さんが選挙（せんきょ）のお手伝（てつだ）いをしているということから、オーストラリアの選挙（せんきょ）のやり方（かた）を知（し）りました。日本（にほん）とは投票（とうひょう）の仕方（しかた）が全然（ぜんぜん）違（ちが）うことに驚（おどろ）きました。そこで、今回（こんかい）は世界（せかい）の選挙事情（せんきょじじょう）について調（しら）べてみました。投票（とうひょう）の仕方（しかた）はその国（くに）それぞれに違（ちが）いがあり、とても興味深（きょうみぶか）いです。みなさんの国（くに）ではどんな風（ふう）に投票（とうひょう）しますか？日本（にほん）と同（おな）じですか？それとも全（まった）く違（ちが）いますか？よかったらコメント欄（らん）で教（おし）えてください。

I learned about how elections work in Australia after one of my students there helped out during an election. I was surprised at how different the voting system is compared to Japan. So, I decided to research how elections are held around the world. Each country has its own unique way of voting, and it’s really fascinating. How do people vote in your country? 長島（ながしま）スパーランドや、大阪（おおさか）万博（ばんぱく）に引（ひ）き続（つづ）き、今回（こんかい）は日本（にほん）で最（もっと）も人気（にんき）のある東京（とうきょう）ディズニーランドの人気（にんき）アトラクションのランキングについて話（はな）しました。
ディズニーランドは、長島（ながしま）スパーランドやUSJと比（くら）べるとジェットコースターより来（き）た人（ひと）が楽（たの）しめる雰囲気（ふんいき）を重視（じゅうし）したテーマパークで、人気（にんき）アトラクションも私（わたし）たちの想像（そうぞう）とは全（まった）く違（ちが）ったものがランクインしていました。

Following our episodes on Nagashima Spa Land and the Osaka Expo, this time we talked about the ranking of the most popular attractions at Tokyo Disneyland, one of the most beloved theme parks in Japan.
Compared to Nagashima Spa Land or USJ, Tokyo Disneyland focuses more on creating an enjoyable atmosphere for visitors rather than thrilling roller coasters. Interestingly, the attractions that ranked high were completely different from what we had expected.

今回は　先生（せんせい）を　している　友達（ともだち）の「職業病（しょくぎょうびょう）」に　始（はじ）まり、大学生活（だいがくせいかつ）の　話（はなし）、それから　大阪（おおさか）で　始（はじ）まった　万博（ばんぱく）の　話（はなし）を　しました。

大阪万博（おおさかばんぱく）の　話（はなし）を　メインに　したかったのですが、その他（そのた）の　話（はなし）で　盛（も）り上（あ）がって　しまい、万博（ばんぱく）の　話（はなし）は　あまり　できていません。

まだ　始（はじ）まった　ばかりで　情報（じょうほう）も　少（すく）ないので、分（わ）かり次第（しだい）　随時（ずいじ）アップデート　していきたいと　思（おも）います。

This time, we started with a story about a “professional habit” of my friend who works as a teacher, then talked about university life, and finally moved on to the Expo that just started in Osaka.

We actually wanted the Osaka Expo to be the main topic, but we ended up having so much fun talking about other things that we didn’t cover the Expo much.

Since it has only just started and there isn’t much information available yet, I’d like to keep updating it as I learn more.

ジェットコースターは好（す）きですか？
三重県（みえけん）にある長島（ながしま）スパーランドという遊園地（ゆうえんち）、富士山（ふじさん）の近（ちか）くにある富士急（ふじきゅう）ハイランドという遊園地（ゆうえんち）は日本（にほん）でもトップ２の怖（こわ）いジェットコースターばかりある遊園地（ゆうえんち）です。

今回（こんかい）は三重県（みえけん）の長島（ながしま）スパーランドに限定（げんてい）して、そのジェットコースターの人気（にんき）ランキングについて話（はな）しました。

ちょっと海外（かいがい）の皆（みな）さんには馴染（なじ）みのない遊園地（ゆうえんち）ですが、観光客（かんこうきゃく）に人気（にんき）のディズニーランドやユニバーサルスタジオジャパンよりも、怖（こわ）いジェットコースターを体験（たいけん）したい場合（ばあい）はおすすめです。

名古屋（なごや）から簡単（かんたん）に行（い）けるので、よかったら日本（にほん）に来（き）た際（さい）は行（い）ってみてください。

Do you like roller coasters?
There are two amusement parks in Japan famous for having the scariest roller coasters: Nagashima Spa Land in Mie Prefecture and Fuji-Q Highland near Mt. Fuji.

In this episode, we focused on Nagashima Spa Land in Mie Prefecture and talked about the popularity rankings of its roller coasters.

It might not be very well-known to people overseas, but if you want to experience thrill rides even scarier than those at Disneyland or Universal Studios Japan—both popular tourist spots—this park is highly recommended.

It's easy to get there from Nagoya, so if you visit Japan, definitely consider checking it out!
