    A high or total spinal blockade is one of the most feared anesthetic complications for providers on L&D. High or total spinal epidural blockade occurs when local anesthetic spreads too high within the neuraxial space and causes a variety of symptoms such as difficulty breathing, arm and upper body weakness, respiratory depression and even hemodynamic collapse.

This practice, when done well, is one of the great successes of modern medicine. Less commonly discussed are the long term psychological consequences when a patient experiences pain during a c section, especially when she isn't believed.
