Kelefa Sanneh has made a deep study of how our popular music unites and divides us, the tribes it forms, and how its genres, shape-shifting across the years, give us a way to track larger forces and concerns. Sanneh debunks cherished myths, reappraises beloved heroes and upends familiar ideas of musical greatness, arguing that sometimes the best popular music isn't transcendent: it expresses our grudges, as well as our hopes, and it is motivated by greed as well as inspiration.

The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984 when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism, and propaganda. Great Britain, known as Airstrip One, has become a province of a totalitarian superstate named Oceania that is ruled by the Party who employs the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Big Brother, the leader of the Party, enjoys an intense cult of personality despite the fact that he may not even exist.

Football is a staple of American culture, but longtime high school coach Gordon "Tuffy" Nehls is now seeing it threatened by a wave of anti-football sentiment. The Cricket on the Heart is a novella by Charles Dickens, published by Bradbury and Evans, and released 20 December 1845. Dickens began writing the book in October 1845 and finished it by December. Like all of Dickens’s Christmas books, it was published in book form, not as a serial. Dickens described the novel as “quiet and domestic innocent and pretty.” It is subdivided into chapters called “Chirps”, similar to the “Quarters” of The Chimes or the “Staves” of A Christmas Carol.

From the husband's death in Pakistan, the story becomes her daughter Meena's recollection of the traumatic death and her own personal struggles and challenges in India and finally in Canada.

This work is intended to stand unto itself as more a living, breathing portrait of art painted with carefully chosen words, than just as a really interesting story told. The intent here is for the listener to view the landscape through the eyes of the main character, to feel what he does as he ambles along in this adventure. When the main character feels the pain and pleasures of the old dirt road, then all will only be right if the listener feels these same identical experiences.
