Publié pour la première fois en 1894, "Poil de carotte", fortement inspiré de l'enfance de son auteur, peut être considéré comme une œuvre partiellement autobiographique, même si Jules Renard ne l'a jamais revendiquée comme telle. L'histoire de "Poil de carotte" relate les aventures de François Lepic, un jeune garçon roux victime des farces de ses frères et sœurs et des reproches constants de la part de sa propre mère. C'est d'ailleurs sa famille qui lui choisit ce surnom grotesque : Poil de carotte.
