Premchand's literary career started as a freelancer in Urdu. In his initial short stories, he has depicted the patriotic upsurge that was sweeping the country in the first decade of the 19th century and wrote of the life around him and made his readers aware of the problems of the urban middle class and the country's villages. The Vedas are a large body of religious literature that dates back to ancient India. Ahmed Faraz is considered one of the greatest modern Urdu poets of the last century. Essentially a romantic poet, steeped in classical Persian and Urdu traditions, he combined the sensitivity and lyricism of the great Urdu poet Meer Taqi Meer and the philosophical range and depth of Mirza Ghalib, his poetry also reflected a progressive outlook. He is often compared to Faiz Ahmed Faiz for his simple style of writing because of which he became popular among common readers and connoisseurs of urdu poetry.

Kurukshetra is a Hindi classic. It gives an extraordinary account of the Kurukshetra war mentioned in the Mahabharata. It describes in vivid details the armed confrontation that took place between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. This bloody war lasted eighteen days. The author's own views on war are showcased in this work. He criticizes war but also admits that it is a necessary evil. It describes the demerits of war and the damage it does to mankind, through the medium of poetry.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz is the most famous contemporary Urdu poet of the 20th century who appeals both to the common man as well as the elite connoisseurs of poetry. Faiz's ghazals reflect a strong influence of the Persian style and diction, because of which he is often considered the inheritor of the tradition of Ghalib; and at the same time several of them are written in a simple conversational style dealing with the problems of the common man.

भारत के उर्दू शायरों में निदा फ़ाज़ली आज एक महत्त्वपूर्ण नाम है। उन्होंने नई शैली में नए विषयों पर लिखकर शायरी को एक नया मोड़ दिया है। उनके कलाम में देश की ज़िन्दगी अपने लोकरंगों के लिबास में पूरी तरह मौजूद है।
