Native Indian

In this short story, about a 30-40 minute read, you will meet a spunky woman whose determination led her to do amazing things, in spite of enormous challenges! Katherine Beard, 1908-1998, is not a well known missionary outside of Northern Arizona. I personally knew Miss Beard, and like me, you will be inspired and challenged as you get to know her through this story.

Myriad internal and external forces have profoundly shaped Indian lives on the Great Plains.

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was the culmination of the United States' policy to force native populations to relocate west of the Mississippi River. The most well-known episode in the eviction of American Indians was the "Trail of Tears" along which Southeastern Indians were driven from their homes in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, to reservations in present-day Oklahoma. But the struggle in the South was part of a wider story that reaches back in time to the War of 1812, back through many states and into the lives of so many tribes who were also forced to depart from their homes.

Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Sergeant Charlie LeBeau’s morning break is interrupted when he notices a toddler alone at the edge of the grocery store’s parking lot. Upon further investigation, Charlie discovers the child’s mother dead in the tall grass just off the pavement. The woman appears beaten, or was she hit by a car? Was it an accident or murder?

In the early 1920s, members of the Osage Nation and others began to turn up dead, and in many cases, the proceeds of oil revenue owned by these people passed to white “Guardians” appointed by the federal government. By 1925, at least 24 Osage had died in unexplained circumstances, and some accounts suggest that the actual number may have been over 100. Local law enforcement seemed unable (or perhaps unwilling) to investigate effectively, and it was left to a small bureau in Washington to undertake their first homicide investigation.

Wolfgang went into a highly mobile ready stance: a low crouch with his feet apart and his right foot quartered behind the left, every muscle in his body tense. This position gave him instant mobility to spring into a powerful attack. Breathing heavily, his teeth clenched, eyes wide and staring madly, he evenly distributed and balanced his weight, his left arm acting as a shield held away from his body. His eyes looked over his left shoulder and above the top of his shoulder as he tried to determine his opponent’s possible moves. Then he noticed the knife on the ground.

Physician, activist, and author Charles Alexander Eastman was the first Native American certified in Western medicine and one of the first authors of any background to emphasize the Native American perspective. In The Soul of the Indian, he shares the customs, rituals, celebrations, and beliefs of Native American spirituality, and in so doing provides a powerful account of the “Great Mystery” at their core.
