Publisher's summary

Eighty-two percent of parents believe myths about homeschooling. Keep reading to make sure you’re not one of them!

Kent Larson understands the myths about homeschooling better than most because he believed them all. 12 Homeschool Myths Debunked presents his journey from opponent to advocate using compelling, fact-based answers to the most common homeschooling objections.

12 Homeschool Myths Debunked tackles the myths head-on including those relating to socialization, academic performance, and college admissions. Did you know one of the most extensive studies ever conducted of homeschooler standardized test scores found them to be 37% higher than those of average public school students? If you’re surprised by this result, you’ll want to hear our study details, followed by SAT results which are even more shocking!

Does the topic of homeschooling trigger arguments with your spouse? Do you doubt your ability to manage it all? Do your friends or family members think homeschooling is a dangerous idea? 12 Homeschool Myths Debunked delivers compelling answers to the toughest questions.

In this book, you will discover:

  • The one myth that must be debunked, because it keeps people believing all the others
  • Why homeschoolers are getting into many of the best colleges
  • Reasons homeschoolers don’t become isolated
  • How to keep unfounded biases, assumptions, and stereotypes from harming your kids
  • Which schooling choice produces the best socialization
  • Why people wrongly assume they don't have the patience or aptitude to homeschool
  • The real reason some kids are socially inept, goofy, awkward, and nerdy
  • Stacks of empirical evidence and relatable first-hand experiences
  • Why men are resistant to homeschooling and how to change their mindset

Does homeschooling seem overwhelming?

Initially, I assumed homeschooling would require a burdensome amount of tracking and reporting. It had to, I reasoned, thinking about the massive bureaucracy of the US education system. I envisioned piles of paper, my wife frazzled as she pulled all-nighters to get grades and attendance submitted to some government regulatory body. Thankfully, that’s not the case at all, as you'll hear....

With clarity and humor, the listener is guided through the minefield of myths surrounding the topic of homeschooling. This book clears the field, freeing you to evaluate all education options without bias.

If homeschooling were the best choice for your family, wouldn’t you want to know?

The audiobook contains the following bonus content:

  • Bonus Myth: My Kids Will Hate It (and Hate Me)
  • Bonus Myth: It Will Be Expensive
  • Bonus Myth: We Can't Go Back to Traditional School
  • Unplugged: My Story

GREAT INFORMATION!

Ever thought about homeschooling your kids? In these times, it can be the only way to control what really goes into your kids' heads as they're learning. I'm sure every parent/dad out there wants their child to get the best education possible, and there's a lot of garbage out there, both information and people, that want to teach your kids THEIR ideas, not yours.

This book discusses common questions/concerns, and is very thoughtful and informative.
I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for more info, especially by one that's been through it all before.

Great for new or those thinking about alternative education

This book is “written for dads” however, I am not a dad or even a parent. I am a teacher who left the system and is helping parents know they have choices in their child’s educational experiences they want them to have. I would recommend this book to all parents and even teachers skeptical about alternative education routes.

There's nothing like it - a must read (or listen)!

In summary, whether you're a total homeschooling hater, or a skeptic, or even slightly curious and interested or you're frantically looking for options after pulling your kids out of public school, this book is FOR YOU!! It also makes a great gift to the person who tells you - "I can never homeschool my kids" - which I still hear on a regular basis. I used to sweat bullets when I had to continue the conversation after hearing this claim from my friends and family, or even a total stranger - but NOT ANYMORE thanks to this book!!

My first impression is that it's concise and to the point, drama free as most men like to process their information. I was describing this book to my husband as one he would enjoy. Each myth is debunked separately - with no drama, no religion, and no personal attachment - though the author briefly discuss his own 'unbelief' in each myth, but they are kept logical and concise, which I really appreciate - I can imagine that most men appreciate it too.

With that said, I thoroughly enjoy the bonus material as well as the author's personal journey in the 2nd half of the audio. If the myths weren't debunked first, I wouldn't have enjoyed listening to the personal journey and the religious debates/thoughts portion at the end. Whenever I speak to homeschooling families, I usually try to find out what's working for them and what's not - and the journey each family makes to reach where they are at - so I really appreciated the author taking me through his personal journey, from being totally against homeschooling to a total supporter.

I know this book was written primarily for men, however, I wish this book was available 1.5 years ago when I was searching for resources regarding homeschooling. It was daunting and scary due to these myths and I was unsure where to start - the biggest fear of ruining my child's education. The biggest factor is that I was a working mom, so I didn't think reaching out to other homeschooling moms would help since I thought all homeschooling moms stay at home. This book is great resource for working moms - because the issues these women face are somewhat similar to dad's, especially regarding time and resources needed. Again, thanks to Kent Larson the author for having the courage to share his personal journey and thoughts to benefit all of us!!!

Decent

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a really decent book for dispelling myths as well as discussing the benefits and drawbacks of homeschooling. It was aimed specifically at fathers, but I don't think that it needed to be, because it was generic information that could be beneficial to all parents.

I did find it a bit weird that the author says that kids are frequently home-schooled up until high school, at which point they enter the regulated schooling system, as surely, one of the reasons they list is the peer pressure and struggles to fit into the mainstream in schools, which is much more apparent in high schools.
