Publisher's summary

When the fourth princess of Istalam is due to dedicate herself to a path serving the crown, she makes a choice that shocks everyone, herself most of all: She leaves.

In hiding and exiled from power, Miyara finds her place running a tea shop in a struggling community that sits on the edge of a magical disaster zone. But there's more brewing under the surface of this city—hidden magic and hidden machinations—that threaten all the people who've helped her make her own way.

Miyara may not be a princess anymore, but with a teapot in hand, she'll risk her newfound freedom to discover a more meaningful kind of power.

A Coup of Tea is the first book of the Tea Princess Chronicles, a cozy fantasy series full of magic tea, friendship, and lifting people up even when the odds seem impossible.

Lots of social justice, deeper than it sounds

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book! Strong female characters, with magic central to the plot, but the story is really about social justice and advocacy for self and others. It's great watching this woman find her way in the world, and figure out how to best serve others. I bought the second book in the series before finishing the first, and I am finding excuses to block out the world to follow the pathway of Miyara. I'm sure my time with Miyara is part of what caused me to be called a "badass" at work by one of my friends, which was such a pleasant surprise for this 50-something usually meek reader.

Wonderful fun story with well written characters.

The story is well put together and fun and silly at times, but meaningful and important at others. looking forward to the other books.

Delightful!

A compelling start a new series! A sheltered princess strikes out for independence without a clue which path she wants to tread. Her journey will lead her to delicious new experiences and dangerous political maneuverings.

As a personal note, I deeply enjoy the causal inclusivity of the author. While Casey Blair does not shove social causes in her readers’ faces, she built a realistic (in this regard, less so on the magic front) world where people are fundamentally Human. The Othering society is so prone to is acknowledged and rejected through the eyes of our Princess. It’s beautiful and deeply fulfilling.

reallt enjoyed the slower pace

theres a lot the happens in a short time but it almost feels like a slower pace. The story is a beautiful creation of self and independence. Its also about how to be an ally and find yourself. it does a great job creating a world with characters that just seem to fit. there is a spirituality component as well. I also really like how witty the main character is and her unique solutions for things.

Incredible Storyline, Nothing Like It

This is a unique, well-thought out cozy fantasy. It has all of the elements...action, adventure, love, politics, strong protagonist, spirituality, art and magick! It’s just a different kind of book, something that stands out from the bunch. The author is extremely creative and imaginative. The storyline combines many elements in a seamless manner + I really enjoyed the narrator’s voice and character depictions. Highly recommend. One of the best books I’ve listened to in a hot minute!

cozy fantasy tea shop with strong justice analysis

I love cozy fantasy and this is a great entry, running a magical tea shop is just my cup of tea. Natalie is one of my favorite narrators making for a very easy and comforting listen. check out if you enjoy weaponized manners, social justice in city politics, and dragons!
