About this listen
At the end of the Second World War, Matthew Wallingham returns home, blinded and uncertain about his future. Worse yet, his father is ill, and his mother is obviously unhappy, while his younger brother, who has made a success of running the farm on the family’s estate in the war years, is resentful of Matthew’s desire to help him. The only person Matthew feels he can talk to is his grandmother, but the rest of the family regards her as a holy terror.
Matthew soon realises that his future plans are not going to work, and he starts to look for a new career. He finds himself depending more and more on Liz, his nurse who becomes the focus of all his thoughts and his hopes for a future. But Liz has a shadow hanging over her, a shadow that will bring a terrifying violence into the Wallingham family’s life.

Story
A story of mystery, love and revenge. Bridget Gether's parents were killed in the wartime blitz, so she had lived with the Overmeers at Balderstone, their sprawling property in the Northumbrian countryside, since she was a child. Unaware that she had been manipulated into agreeing to marry their son, Laurence, an encounter with Bruce Dickenson, the son of a neighbouring farmer, opened her eyes to the possibility that she might be making a serious mistake.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Story
Some women are destined to arouse in men either fierce hatred or insatiable desire. Such a woman was Katie Mulholland. At 15, a scullery maid in the house of the Rosires, she had been raped by the master. Now, many years later, she had enough money to maintain three carriages if she wanted to and she was on her way to see Bernard Rosier under very different circumstances.

A House Divided
Pure Catherine Cookson! The author paints her characters with a clear and compassionate style. She creates them so well that you care deeply about some of them, abhore the behavior of others and, when you know you are coming to the conclusion of the story - makes you wish the book would never end!

one of my favorites
wonderful love story set right after the 2nd World War. Truly British, giving us an insight of the onset of the disappearance of the old class system at the time. There is plenty of action that kept me at the edge of my seat. I hope Audible will publish many more of Catherine Cookson's books in audible form beyond the few available now, for me each one is a treat.

excellent 👌 narrator!
I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narrator was consistent with her voice acting. The story was heartwarming and also an interesting narrative of post world war 2.

Excellent well developed story
I'm not sure why many of CC books get only four star ratings.
I find her writing and character development to be well thought out and very believable.
She has a deep understanding of human behavior and effectively portrays this.
I have always felt that I've reached the end of a journey fully satisfied when I complete the reading of one of her books!

Love the book and love the narrator!
I read this book originally several years ago from the library. I found it again two years ago on Audible and thought I would try it. Some narrators leave me wanting to read the book myself, others are just okay but Susan Jameson made the story come alive and her voices were perfect. Love this book/narrator!
In a nutshell: War vet. Matthew Wallingham comes home blind and is in the hospital where he meets a nurse named Liz. He is on the point of a breakdown when Liz comes to his aid. When he questions her she tells him she is an older, plain and comfortable woman so he has no fears that she looks down on him for his crying jag. Matthew turns the corner after that night and our story begins. Matthew is from an old aristocratic and wealthy family and Liz is from a middle class farming family.
There are many twists and turns in this lovely story of redemption, healing and betrayal. Susan Jameson makes each character come alive on the canvas of your mind. Enjoy!

Another enjoyable Cookson book!
The narrator is perfect and brings out the cast of characters believably. It’s a favorite book and I am glad to get it in audiobook form. Wish they would do a few more of hers.
