About this listen
Introduction by Stephen King, afterword by Tobe Hooper, cover art by Clive Barker. For this special audio version, the introduction and afterword are by Joe R. Lansdale, and the stories are read by Garris mainstays Matt Frewer, Miguel Ferrer, Steven Weber, and the author himself.
A Life in the Cinema is the first book from award-winning filmmaker Mick Garris. It is a collection of eight prickly tales that reach under the skin of real life and reel life to take you places you never realized you wanted to go.
The title story "A Life in the Cinema" and its sequel "Starfucker", are set in the author's hometown of Hollywood and provide a yellow-jaundiced look at a world you only thought was glamorous.
As Stephen King, in his introduction, says: "Here is a real Hollywood insider writing about the real inside world of filmmaking: the good, the bad, and the cheesy. These stories are both erotic and cynical, but they are, above all, well and fiercely told - when he's yarning about the tarnished tinsel underbelly of the town he knows (and clearly loves) the best, Mick Garris writes like a combination of Robert Bloch and James Ellroy, hard-boiled noir with a ghastly little prink of the devil's own pitchfork."
Not all of the stories are Hollywood-based: Garris includes tales of a grandmother who is just as loving in death as she was in life, a geriatric trailer park with a randy secret, wistful and impossible love with a twist, the wrong kind of baby love, and a deathly brush with fame.
So, welcome to a dark side of Hollywood you've never seen before...

Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

Addiction starts like a sweet lullaby sung by a trusted loved one. It washes away the pains of the day and wraps you in the warmness of the womb where nothing hurts and every dream is possible. Yet soon enough, this warm state of bliss becomes a cold shiver, the ecstasy and dreams become nightmares, yet we can't stop listening to the lullaby. We crave to hear the siren song as it rips us apart.

Story
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Midnight. Some call it the witching hour. Others call it the devil’s hour. Here in the graveyard, midnight is a very special time. It is a time when ghostly spirits are at their strongest, when the veil between our world and theirs is at its thinnest. Legend has it, that while most of the world is asleep, the lack of prayers allow the spirits to communicate under the cover of darkness, among the headstones, their whispers rustling in the leaves of the old oak trees. But if you’re here in the graveyard, you can tell yourself it’s just the wind....

Its hero is Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, a onetime high-school basketball star who on an impulse deserts his wife and son. He is 26 years old, a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty - even, in a sense, human hard-heartedness, and divine Grace. Story
Drought has settled on the town of Peaches, California. The area of the Central Valley where fourteen-year-old Lacey May and her alcoholic mother live was once an agricultural paradise. Now it's an environmental disaster, a place of cracked earth and barren raisin farms. In their desperation, residents have turned to a cult leader named Pastor Vern for guidance. He promises, through secret "assignments," to bring the rain everybody is praying for.

Story
Tess McBray was dying. The solstice syndrome had no cure, and she resigned herself to an early grave. But just when she gave up on survival, all her symptoms mysteriously disappeared. All but one symptom, anyway. Something is wrong with Tess’ hands. They absorb any material they touch, and her skin turns to wood, steel, or concrete. It doesn’t take this comic book obsessed 21-year-old long to figure out what’s going on: somehow, she’s developed super powers. And she’s not the only one; across the country, people are coming forward and sharing their gifts with the world.

Story
Eric Jerome Dickey strides boldly over the minefield that is modern marriage. The central couple's biggest challenge is timing: He works days; she works nights. Instead of growing together, they're rapidly drifting apart, coexisting on stolen phone calls from work, punctuated by occasional bedroom encounters that leave them both feeling even emptier and more alone. When she finds out about his affair - and starts her own - the delicate fabric of their marriage is torn irrevocably asunder. Or is it?

Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality. Jordan Hennessy is a thief. Certainly a Master of Horror
I love Mick Garris and, thanks to this book, now firmly believe that all audiobooks should always be narrated by Matt Frewer.

Enjoyable Collection
While I'm more familiar with his film work, Mick Garris' short stories are a treat to listen to. And I love when short story collections are narrated by multiple people, as is the case in this collection, including Garris himself. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Excellent Creepy Weird Short Stories
A great assortment of paranormal/horror short stories. If you're looking for variety and absolute craziness, this is for you. The opening short story "Baby Shower" is an excellent introduction with its weird twist in the end. My absolute favorite in the series is "Dream on Me," narrated by Mick Garris. In my opinion, it's the one that pulled my attention the hardest with its plot. That's not to say that all of the stories won't track your attention because they will. This audiobook is excellent for people who are short on time but want to experience good suspenseful stories. Each story is professionally narrated with fantastic audio. Highly recommended.

Excellent, Perverted, Erotic Horror Stories
For this series of short horror stories, 'Perverted' just as well be a term of endearment.
These stories themselves are creepy and disgustingly twisted, but in a fun and I-Can't-Put-This-Down sort of way. Mick Garris really pushes to the edge how weird his stories can be without being downright offensive, and the narration by the various narrators really hits it out of the park. Plus, it was supported and endorsed by Stephen King himself, so you know that these are good, if not great, stories for horror fans alike.
If you are looking for creepy adult tales that turn up the Ugly to 11, then this audiobook is made just for you.

Erotic and Horror
I did enjoy this book with some insanity of different stories which had both horror and eroticism and decent narration. I enjoyed some of the stories, my favorite one was Grandmother

Well done!
Beautiful prose throughout. Structurally, some of the stories weren't the best, but they were all well-written and satisfying. Inspired work. A fine job!
