Publisher's summary

He has been called the greatest surgeon of the 20th century. The son of Lebanese immigrants, Michael DeBakey rose from humble beginnings in a backwater Louisiana town to dominate the landscape of modern medicine. His contributions to our understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease, in particular, were innumerable and epoch-making. DeBakey led a life of high drama, from the streets of Jazz Age New Orleans and the operating theaters of pre-war Europe, to the battlefields of World War II and the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina. An advisor to presidents, a health care statesman, and a physician to royalty and commoner alike, he helped build Houston's Texas Medical Center into a jewel of the medical world. Yet DeBakey's own family paid a tremendous cost for his commitment to his fellow man.

Buoyed by unique access to primary resources, A Time for All Things: The Life of Michael E. DeBakey is the first to tell the remarkable story of a driven genius who led a scientific and therapeutic revolution in all its dramatic depth.

Looking for history of a great in surgery

I decided to listen to this book after hearing about Dr. DeBakey but not knowing anything about him. I work in surgery and find the history of it interesting, so I thought I’d give it a try. As someone who does not like non-fiction, I was surprised how into the book. Though dry at a couple times, overall a very interesting read I’m glad I stuck with. Thanks to the author for all of the research that went into this.

Very informative

A book about a man with on an inner mission. The book focuses on the many skillfull achievments beyond the pure and extensive surgical advances contributed to by DeBakey. The book is thin on technical / surgical details though.

Excellent book

Highly recommended, I am a vascular surgeon and have known about Dr. DeBakey for 40 years. Enjoyed listening to a story about his family and his practice. Made an impact on every vascular surgeon around today.

A book every Medical Resident should read.

This book has changed the way I view my profession and my personal life. Dr Debake’s life is inspiring, passionate and monumental. I am an obgyn resident and daily in the OR use Debake pickups. The significance of what he gave to the medical profession and to our country is impossible to put into words but Dr Miller does this in the best way possible. Highly recommend.

A very interesting story about one man and his impact on medicine.

A unique perspective on the son of immigrants to the US and his impact on those he taught and treated. No gruesome details, just a very interesting biography, it will need to be re listened too multiple times to digest the various aspects of this mans life from day one to his last days.
