Critic reviews

"Few will escape the allure of the land and people [Michener] describes.... Alaska takes the reader on a journey through one of the bleakest, richest, most foreboding, and highly inviting territories in our Republic, if not the world.... The characters that Michener creates are bigger than life." ( Los Angeles Times Book Review)
"Always the master of exhaustive historical research, Michener tracks the settling of Alaska [in] vividly detailed scenes and well-developed characters." ( Boston Herald)
"Michener is still, sentence for sentence, writing's fastest attention grabber." ( The New York Times)

Epic Book

Epic Book with a slow start. After the third or forth chapter I was hooked. If my mind wandered (or I got interrupted) I rewinded and listened again. Going to Alaska in July, and so glad I read (or rather listened) to this book first. James McKeever was the perfect narrator for this book.

Would you consider the audio edition of Alaska to be better than the print version?

yes. the print version would take too long to read

What did you like best about this story?

Have you listened to any of Larry McKeever’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Educational and fun to listen to

I listened to this while I was working, and it took a little bit to get into but I loved the story. There is a lot to it, and I have had a few interruptions so I kinda lost track of who was who, so after listening to all of it, i'm going to listen to it again! I like how he linked all the stories together throughout the years.

History Alive

Michener does it again makes history come alive with great characters both historical and fictional. Can’t get enough of this guy. Second time through for me about 40 years apart.

Awesome book

I loved this audiobook. I thought the narrator was a good fit too. This book tells several stories and communicates on several different levels.

Long, but entertaining

This is quite a long story, but easy to follow historical fiction to prepare for a trip to Alaska.

A long but worth it read. A fight over tundra

A fight between two major powers for a desolate land and the people who tried to tame it.

Can’t get enough of Michenor

I’ve listened to probably 8 of his books in the last year. I just love the stories and his presentation of them. I want to travel to all of the places I’ve heard about over the last year and Alaska was just so grand

I found it riveting

I found this book riveting. I could barely put it down. When I was 3 days old back in 1978 we moved from Washington State to Alaska because my dad got a job up there. We lived in Anchorage for 6mo maybe a year (I was an infant so I wouldn't know). Then we moved up to Kotzebue, an Eskimo village on an island North of Nome. We lived there until I was 5 when we moved down to Eagle River (a little town outside of Anchorage). Dad got a job in the Bush out in the middle of nowhere that was closer to Anchorage than Kotz. We lived there until I was 11 and moved to New Mexico in the middle of Summer. Man was that a shock to the system. Listening to this book brought back memories of living up there that I had forgotten. I remember participating in the blanket toss and going to Fur Rendezvous Day ("dressing up" like a trapper and my mother being irritated with the closure of streets in Anchorage for the Iditarod and many more. I loved the way at least 1 character from the story just finished showed up in the next story. The book is incredibly written and incredibly read. I would listen to more from both the author and the narrator.
