Fantastic!

Enjoyed this book immensely. I was initially confused as to why the introductory elements at the beginning of this book weren't instead placed at the beginning of book one but barring that small element of confusion I found the story truly superb. I am looking forward to all the future installments.

Fast and Fun Continuation of Barakdor

This is a great continuation of the story of the conflicts occurring in Barakdor. While the main character from the first book is present in this one for a while, the perspective here is from a completely different character in a different part of the virtual (potentially not-truly-virtual) world of Barakdor. Great world-building which reveals aspects of the world not previously guessed at and fleshes out references made in the first book. The way the stories are headed towards a unified and epic conclusion from different perspectives has rarely been this well done. Highly recommended!

Great second story thread

This is the second book I have read/listened to by this author and I am counting the days til the next book. Problem is, I don’t know when that is.. I love the world the author has created! I can guess where these two characters paths will cross, but I have to wait and see if I am correct.
This is a standalone story since it follows Alexia and her initial time in Barakdor and can be read first or second. It’s a completely different perspective from Lincoln’s. She does not have a game assistant in the same way Lincoln does, but receives advice from other characters. We get character and equipment stats, but it’s not constant or overwhelming.

This is the first book I have listened to by this narrator ( Stephanie Dillard ) and I would gladly listen to another. She expertly performs this story so I forgot I was being read to. She uses a good range of voices and brings out the character’s personalities.

When the characters stories converge, I wonder which narrator the author will go with? One? Both? If he only uses one I will sadly miss the other.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Enjoying the Series

I received a free review copy.

I enjoyed the book. The MC is a complete noob to gaming but finds good friends that can help her learn how to survive in this virtual world. From the beginning, she enters the game in an unconventional manner and is given many unique items/abilities but shows she is worthy of them through her courage and good nature.

It was easy to root for the MC. This is a unique LitRPG that does not emphasize combat although there is some combat in it. I liked the aspects that make the book different from others in the genre. I enjoyed listening to the book and look forward to the next book in the series.

Great book all around.

This is a perfect book for the second in a series. You won't want to stop listening. A rich and satisfying world, a story worth writing, and a narrator that brings it all together. I received this audio book free at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

Engaging World and Characters

Although this is technically book 2, you can still enjoy it if you haven't read book 1. Those wishing to continue with the series will probably want to read both stories though. Alexa is pretty clueless. And yet, she has a kind heart with plenty of stubbornness. We share her journey through growth, danger, and fantastic sights. Her naivete is refreshing for LitRPG, which often has lifelong gamers using their knowledge to have advantages over the virtual world. Alexa fumbles, at times comically so, and forges on to face challenges yet to come. Comic relief is well timed and feels natural. If you enjoy the genre, I certainly recommend both this and book 1. I know I am looking forward to release of the remainder of the series.

Narration is excellent as well. A repertoire of voices to both be unobtrusive and make it easy to determine which characters are speaking. Good energy as well.

another great installment.

This book was simply great, fast paced and full of interesting lore. the narrator was great from start to finish.

I think maybe Alexa may have had a bit too much stuff just handed to her, but the setup for the story and the worldbuilding was top notch.

will definitely get the next one.

I love this world!

Ember Lane takes us back to Barakdor, but with a completely different point of view. This time we follow Alexa Drey, a woman who has never had the slightest interest in video games. Her greatest is strengths are her persistence and her sheer likability. She stumbles into Barakdor through a side door and ends up in a zone she isn't ready for. Every friend she makes has their own agenda and every gift comes with strings attached.

There are so many interesting characters in these books. I love the way they look whimsical and simple at first glance but show real depth once you get past the surface. It really feels like these NPCs are slowly letting us into their world.

I recommend both books of this series for something a little different and very enjoyable. I look forward to continuing the series and exploring this world.

AFter the first

Disappointing. The MC is made to be dumber then she is just to slow the story. Her advancement is used as an excuse to fill in too much story and try to add too much mystery for the amount of story and progress allowed. The MC makes it a few towns over while traveling because of excuses/reasons they add as "story". After a certain point, that added "story" is just in the way of finding out how long you have to wait between any progress the MC makes. Lazy.
