When honor meets love, sparks ignite… just in time for Christmas.
Colonel Nicholas Montgomery never expected to survive the bloody battlefields of Spain, let alone find himself back in England with a solemn vow to fulfill. After a fateful encounter with a courageous lieutenant, Nick is bound to protect the fallen soldier’s family—a promise that leads him straight to the fiery and captivating Catherine Somerville.
Catherine Somerville has spent her life keeping her family afloat, facing every challenge with strength and determination. But when a handsome and battle-scarred colonel arrives with devastating news and an even more shocking proposal, Cate is torn between duty and her heart. With her home at risk and her siblings depending on her, she strikes a marriage bargain with Nick to secure their future… but neither expects the blazing attraction that kindles between them.
As Christmas approaches, Cate and Nick must navigate meddling relatives, mischievous children, and the ghosts of their pasts to discover the greatest gift of all—a love that transcends duty and endures forever.

Story
Living in a year around Christmas town has its drawbacks. The caroling, the decorations, the insanely cheery spirit, it never disappears. It's why I like to hibernate away in my cave - I mean housekeeping a healthy distance from the holly jolly spirits. And all was going according to plan until my nemesis, Storee Taylor, moved in next door to care for her Aunt Cindy. Without blinking, she turned my simple world into a real nightmare-before-Christmas, especially when she decided to enter the town Christmas Kringle contest - which she was determined to win.

This is a story of friendship that defies all odds and survives and flourishes regardless of the impediments that arise. The friendship is born out of an almost tragedy and extreme bravery by one Elizabeth Bennet. In saving the lives of those in peril, she thwarts the designs of one of the villains of this tale and makes an enemy of the person. As in canon, our Anne is sickly. In this variation, it is because she had suffered a bad case of childhood scarlet fever. For the purposes of this story, the disease has seriously weakened her cardiovascular system.

William Yorke faces a tall order: convince people he is worthy of the Dukedom of Rockwood that has unexpectedly fallen to him. Returning from London to his enormous estate, he breaks his journey at an inn and finds himself witness to a drunkard selling his wife to the highest bidder. William outbids the coarse competition and offers the woman a position as housemaid at his estate, uncomfortably aware that his impulsive chivalry will lead to talk—something he abhors.

The descendant of adventuring-dead-aristocrats, Clarissa Knightley supplements a modest inheritance by penning gothic novels that cost more than they earn. Upon learning that she has mysteriously inherited a share of an earl's estate, she rashly packs up her household. Let down by the hero
The heroine is likable & competent. She skillfully manages a large family of younger siblings and an impoverished estate. The hero is emotionally distant, with a strong sense of honor and duty. It’s a great setup for attraction and conflict.
The story rolled along very well with plenty of twists and turns and ups and downs. That is, until the hero started acting like a controlling jerk at about the 75% mark. To make matters worse, the heroine conceded to his demands. After that I lost heart. I finished the book but I took a star off for the loss of a feisty heroine.
