Publisher's summary

In Baby, You’re Gonna Be Mine, Kevin Wilson’s first story collection in nearly a decade, Wilson combines his signature quirkiness with his keen eye for emotional complexity to explore the fraught relationship between parents and children.

“Wildfire Johnny” is the story of a man who discovers a magic razor that allows him to travel back in time. “Scroll Through the Weapons” is about a couple taking care of their underfed and almost feral nieces and nephews. “Signal to the Faithful” follows a boy as he takes a tense road trip with his priest. And “Baby, You’re Gonna Be Mine”, the title story, is about a narcissistic rock star who moves back home during a rough patch. These stories all build on each other in strange and remarkable ways, showcasing Wilson’s crackling wit and big heart.

Filled with imagination and humor, Baby, You’re Gonna Be Mine is an exuberant collection of captivating and charmingly bizarre stories that promise to burrow their way into your heart and soul.

Jarring stories that make you think

The stories here are haunting and certainly don't make for light reading. The lack of coherent resolutions and the way Wilson defies tying anything up in a bow left me a confused at times, and yet I couldn't help but keep thinking about the narratives after I read them.

The performances were a bit too lethargic and, at times, unconvincing.

Compelling

Compelling vignettes of acute, emotional intensity that are mysterious as they are profound. Great collection.

Dark, Sad, and Depressing

I read “Baby, You’re Going to be Mine” for Book Club, or I never would have finished. It is dark, sad, and depressing. The consensus among the ladies in my group was the author is a very good writer however...the people and things he writes about are guaranteed to deflate. From the four hopeless children in the first story to the throat slasher, the desperately troubled son and the dead deer, to the song in the last story...“Bitch, you’re dumb ass is mine.” I cannot adequately describe how I dreaded each new story. What a downer!

Just awful

I was excited to read this book after hearing a review on the today show.- someone who actually said this book should win the Pulitzer Prize. I can honestly say it’s the worst book I’ve ever heard. The voices who read are incredibly irritating. The stories are read Interchangeably between a woman who sounds like she’s been smoking something and is sky high. The man is equally hard to listen to. The stories are childish, weird and just plain stupid. Got half way through thinking it would improve but it just got worse.
