About this listen
An award-winning political journalist for The Atlantic tells the inside story of how the embattled Democratic Party, seeking a direction for its future during the Trump years, successfully regained the White House.
The 2020 presidential campaign was a defining moment for America. As Donald Trump and his nativist populism cowed the Republican Party into submission, many Democrats — haunted by Hillary Clinton’s shocking loss in 2016 and the resulting four-year-long identity crisis — were convinced that he would be unbeatable. Their party and the country, it seemed, might never recover.
How, then, did Democrats manage to win the presidency, especially after the longest primary race with the biggest field ever? How did they keep themselves united through an internal struggle between newly empowered progressives and establishment forces — playing out against a pandemic, an economic crisis, and a new racial reckoning?
Edward-Isaac Dovere’s Battle for the Soul is the searing, fly-on-the-wall account of the Democrats’ journey through recalibration and rebirth. Dovere traces this process: from the early days in the wilderness of the post-Obama era to the jockeying of potential candidates; from the backroom battles and exhausting campaigns to the unlikely triumph of the man few expected to win; and on through the inauguration and the insurrection at the Capitol.
Dovere draws on years of on-the-ground reporting and contemporaneous conversations with the key players — whether with Pete Buttigieg in his hotel suite in Des Moines an hour before he won the Iowa caucuses or with Joe Biden in his first-ever interview in the Oval Office — as well as with aides, advisors, and voters. Offering unparalleled access and an insider’s command of the campaign, Battle for the Soul takes a compelling look at the policies, politics, and people, as well as the often absurd process of running for president. This fresh and timely story brings you on the trail, into the private rooms, and along to eavesdrop on critical conversations. You will never see campaigns or this turning point in our history the same way again.

Story
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects and his legal troubles were mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the president-elect.

Story
Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Gabriel Debenedetti reveals an inside look at the historically close, complicated, occasionally co-dependent, and at-times uncertain relationship between Joe Biden and Barack Obama. The original mismatch between the veteran Washington traditionalist and the once-in-a-generation outsider has transformed repeatedly in ways that have molded not just four different presidential campaigns and two different political parties, but also wars, a devastating near-depression, movements for social equality, and the fight for the future of American democracy.

Over his 50-year career in Washington, Joe Biden has become known for his wild dishonesty, embarrassing policy failings, and an absolute lack of accountability, culminating in his predictably unpopular presidency. But what has not yet been revealed is the vast web of consultants, bureaucrats, corporate titans, foreign interests, and various extended family members (it’s not just Hunter!) who have achieved unfathomable wealth and power while keeping Biden in charge.

Story
For almost three decades, Fox News has not only made political careers (see: President Donald J. Trump) but also fundamentally altered the political landscape of the United States. It is a truism: as Fox goes, so goes the nation—into further divisiveness and awash in fake news, a gleefully polarizing company. But just as Fox has pushed America apart, now it too is coming apart. As is the family dynasty behind it.

As one of the strategists behind the famous 2012 RNC “autopsy,” Miller conducts his own forensic study on the pungent carcass of the party he used to love, cutting into all the hubris, ambition, idiocy, desperation, and self-deception for everyone to see. In a bracingly honest reflection on both his own past work for the Republican Party and the contortions of his former peers in the GOP establishment, Miller draws a straight line between the actions of the 2000s GOP to the Republican political class's Trumpian takeover, including the horrors of January 6th.

It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the tragic story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign - the candidate herself.

I highly recommend this book to any election nerd. The book may come across as center left with some viewpoints, so just a general warning. I was totally amazed at all the inside info and snippets the journalist was able to obtain while writing this book. The narrator for the audiobook did a fantastic job as well.

Interesting Story, but not well written and missing too many details
Look, I’m obviously not the targeted reader/listener of this book. But I like to read books from different point of views than my own but this book just doesn’t cut it when it comes to a political campaign book. The author spends too much time romanticizing Joe Biden and the democratic field and comes across incredibly condescending to anyone that isn’t an Uber liberal elitist. Unlike Allen and Parmes’ Lucky, this book doesn’t even make an attempt at staying neutral and living up to journalistic integrity. This is a love song for Biden. If you are a Biden/Democrat devotee (and don’t mind rather adequate prose) then this is the book for you. If you aren’t that, read Lucky and you’ll get the same story, just written much better and without the preachiness of this slog of a book.

Superficial MSNBC level analysis
Why would anyone write a book that is essentially stenography of the corporate Democrats?
Why just not zone out and listen to Rachel Maddow?
Utterly superficial as is the Biden talking point concerning the “soul” of America, the author just cheers on the corporate neoliberal global capital status quo.
He completely ignores how the corporatists colluded to eliminate the one candidate who could have brought us back from the brink - an old school FDR Democrat.
This book is intellectual rubbish.

Disclaimer - I voted for President Trump.
The title of this book says it all. Defeating President Trump was the sole focus of the Democratic Party. All strategy centered around beating Trump. I contend this is why there was a battle for the soul of the Democratic Party. Their actions were motivated by hate of Trump rather than love for our country. This book is a fairy tale. Had I known the Democrats and Biden were such saints, I would have changed my vote. Not.
I am a devout Catholic. The Catholic Church's moral and social teachings require protection for the human embryo, marriage between a man and woman, anti-euthanasia, and other moral evils. Politicians who promote abortion, gay marriage, and euthanasia should be denied Holy Communion. President Biden is a devout "cafeteria catholic."
