About this listen
A group of lifetime friends gather together to confront life, love, and now mortality.
Before Everything is a celebration of friendship and love between a group of women who have known each another since they were girls. They've faced everything together, from youthful sprees and scrapes to midlife turning points. Now, as Anna, the group's trailblazer and brightest spark, enters hospice, they gather to do what they've always done - talk and laugh and help each other make choices and plans, this time in Anna's rural Massachusetts home. Helen, Anna's best friend and a celebrated painter, is about to remarry. The others face their own challenges - Caroline with her sister's mental health crisis, Molly with a teenage daughter's rebellion, Ming with her law practice - dilemmas with kids and work and love. Before Everything is as funny as it is bittersweet, as the friends revel in the hilarious mistakes they've seen each another through, the secrets kept and adventures shared. But now all sense of time has shifted, and the pattern of their lives together takes on new meaning. The novel offers a brilliant, emotionally charged portrait, deftly conveying the sweep of time over everyday lives and showing how even in difficult endings, gifts can unfold. Above all it is an ode to friendship and to how one person shapes the journeys of those around her.

Story
Two cousins, Rory and Arden, lie unconscious in a hospital burn unit. The fire, which broke out in their shared college dorm room, killed another student, and the police want answers. Tension between Rory and Arden's parents was already at an all-time high before the fire, owing to a recent financial crisis and the decline of the family business. As the parents huddle anxiously in the waiting room, carefully avoiding the subject of their own unraveling relationships, disturbing truths come to light.

Story
Charles Wang is mad at America. A brash, lovable immigrant businessman who built a cosmetics empire and made a fortune, he's just been ruined by the financial crisis. Now all Charles wants is to get his kids safely stowed away so that he can go to China and attempt to reclaim his family's ancestral lands - and his pride. Outrageously funny and full of charm, The Wangs vs. the World is an entirely fresh look at what it means to belong in America - and how going from glorious riches to (still name-brand) rags brings one family together in a way money never could.

Story
Marina Keegan's star was on the rise when she graduated magna cum laude from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York International Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at the New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash. Even though she was just 22 when she died, Marina left behind a rich, expansive trove of prose that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty, and possibility of her generation.

Could not follow
I have a real love for books about women's relationships with each other and about coping with illness, but I just couldn't finish this book. It was so hard to follow. It was super disjointed and some of the sections seemed cropped way too short. Sorry, this one was not for me.

Meandering
good story just a little too Meandering and all over the place with the characters. there were so many characters and so many details about their lives and the details didn't seem to be well connected to the root of the story at all times. I found myself looking for the point of some of the details the author was giving us about all the characters lives and I kept trying to tie them in to a central point in the book and sometimes it was difficult.
