Publisher's summary

Can't you hear it, Talia? Can't you hear the waves singing?

Sixteen-year-old Talia was born to a life of certainty and luxury, destined to become empress of half the world. But when an ambitious rival seizes power, she and her mother are banished to a nowhere province on the far edge of the Northern Sea.

It is here, in the drafty halls of the Ruen-Dahr, that Talia discovers family secrets, a melancholy boy with a troubling vision of her future, and a relic that holds the power of an ancient star. On these shores, the eerie melody of the sea is stronger than ever, revealing long-forgotten tales of the goddess Rahn. The more dark truths that Talia unravels about the gods' history - and her own - the more the waves call to her, and it may be her destiny to answer.

Beautiful story line

Really enjoyed, such a lovely listen. The growth of the characters is intriguing and how they interact isn’t where I thought it would go which is always a win

good and not so good

The performance was pretty good, although most of the male character voices sounded the same so it was a bit confusing at times. The story itself was very interesting but I feel like there were some holes. I think a bit more time should have been spent explaining the history of why the Empress and Talia hated each other so much. And the "love story" between Talia and Caden was pointless and unrealistic. I don't want be too specific so as to avoid a spoiler, but it was all "Harlequin Romance-y" (yuck). She was basically instantaneous in love with him, then it fell apart in the blink of an eye, and was basically never mentioned again. But my biggest issue was that Talia was completely unlikable for the majority of the book. She was good in the very beginning, but then she basically turned into an inconsiderate, moody brat until about the last quarter of the book. It was hard to root for her, honestly. And it wasn't an anti-hero type of thing either. I actually love a good anti-hero. But this wasn't that. For example, Wen gave her zero reason to treat him badly, but she was horrible to him for the whole middle of the book. Honestly wanted to smack her. I'm going to give this author one more try as I really enjoyed the story, and I recently listened to Echo North and really liked it, but this book was irritating.
