About this listen

"A gorgeous, aching love letter to stories, storytellers and the doors they lead us through...absolutely enchanting." (Christina Henry, best-selling author of Alice and Lost Boys)

Los Angeles Times best seller!

In the early 1900s, a young woman embarks on a fantastical journey of self-discovery after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut.

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place.

Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Lush and richly imagined, a tale of impossible journeys, unforgettable love, and the enduring power of stories awaits in Alix E. Harrow's spellbinding debut—step inside and discover its magic.

One of the biggest questions listeners have when it comes to approaching a new audiobook is whether or not they'll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable, as audiobooks are at least a few hours long (with many clocking in at 20 hours long—or more!), and sticking with one person's voice for that time period can feel like a big commitment. We rounded up some of the best female narrators with a robust list of audiobooks under their belts.

A princess in a castle can't fend for herself

Occasionally overly verbose. A neat concept, but with a main character who is a straight up idiot.

Addicting Story

The beginning is a little slow but becomes a story you can't put down. I wasn't sure what to expect from the summary, but was surprised by this gem. I did find myself a bit frustrated by the main character January, and her complete lack of self preservation when presented with almost any challenge. I'm sure it was because of her age but her lack of response became a bit predictable.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Great fantasy -- especially good for YA. I particularly enjoyed the first three quarters of the book which went back and forth between January's story and Ade's story. I was totally engrossed in their adventures, the writing was lovely, the narrator exceptional. Toward the end, the story seemed to drag on unnecessarily, and I was tired of January's teenage outbursts. I was very glad of the epilogue, though, which tied up all the loose ends satisfactorily.

Beautifully Written & Performed but Never Lets Up

I have great appreciation for Alex Harrow's talent and January LaVoy did a magnificent job, though the story is very tense and the tension never lets up for a moment. There are simply no relaxing or pleasant parts, in my opinion. I am sorry I spent the time.

Wordy

I really had high hopes for this book. The language and prose at first is beautiful and enchanting, but quickly becomes overused, annoying, and a barrier to moving the plot forward. The storyline itself is a great idea, but I wish there was more story actually happening instead of these lengthy over descriptions of thoughts/feelings/appearances. Overall, worth the read but I found myself having trouble finishing because I was tired of the prose and wanted things to move along.

This is a real fairy tale

When I was reading Harry Potter, I was irritated at how he didn’t behave like a neglected and abused child. This book gets it right. I’ve read reviews that complain the heroine is weak and annoying. Well, that’s what real abuse does to children. But this is also a story of taking back and empowerment. It’s a slow start, but I loved it in the end.
