About this listen

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK

Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

“I just loved how intriguing the mystery is but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother, and a teenage daughter."" —Reese Witherspoon

Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.

With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they’ve always resisted: depend on each other.

Fun Listen for October

I enjoyed listening to this audio book. I especially liked the relationships between the characters, mother-daughter-granddaughter. It is reminiscent of Gilmore Girls. The author gives them all a strong voice and varies the chapters by telling the story from each of their points of view. She does it well, and with the excellent reader's help, it's easy to distinguish who is the main focus in each scene. I liked how the story developed with the mystery and intrigue. I'll look for more books by this author, and more audios read by narrator Jane Oppenheimer.

Great book… but the narrators spittle

Great story
Great book…so far
But why oh why would you choose a narrator that you can hear their spittle
It’s taken me days listening little bit by little bit because it’s absolutely irritating and I’m finally giving up…. It’s like nails on a chalkboard
I’ll buy the paperback

Great “popcorn” book.

Great book. Not too twisty. Straight forward murder mystery. Enjoyed the 3 generation dynamics. The performance was enjoyable too.

Solid read

Finally, a book with some likable, well-rounded characters! As a long time Gilmore Girls can I appreciated the similarities (as well as the differences).

I rated it a 4/5 because I didn’t find the mystery all that compelling. I’m not sure why, but I just didn’t feel all that invested.

I also enjoyed this author’s writing style. She was creative with her descriptions but in an easy to follow way. I hate when authors constantly write in flowery metaphors with sentences lasting entire paragraphs.

Overall a solid read I’d recommend and I’m excited to see what she writes next.
