Publisher's summary

Life is simple in Ben's small town until an attack brings the arrival of exciting strangers straight out of a story. Before Ben understands what is happening, he embarks on a dangerous journey to help his friends. A mage, demons, thieves, and assassins are just a few of the perils he will face while trying to make it to safety. But things aren't always what they seem, and safety is a fragile concept when the destructive behaviors of the powerful are exercised unchecked. In Ben's world - like our own - politics, the economy, and military might create a system to keep the elite in power at the expense of the common man. As the series unfolds and Ben's knowledge and skills grow, he will have to decide if he wants to live within the system, flee from it, or break it.

good story aside from one character doing a 180

this was a good read and I do recommend it. I only had a small issue with one of the characters towards the very end. this character actions come off very out of character. there's no issue with the character doing what they did. it's like if that character was going to do that. their motivation should have been more fleshed out not some out of nowhere betrayal which left me both super annoyed / confused at the end of this book. but hopefully that character's motivation will get fleshed out in the next book and hopefully they don't turn this character into a future villain that would come off so forced

Great fun

the book had a bit of a slow pace but I enjoy the the story and the performance was wonderful.
I already got the next in the series and they intend on continuing on so long as the story remains good (no doubt that it will)

Fantastic Book and Fantastic Audio

In four days, I have enjoyed a book more than I have in years. Couldn't put it down. The story is captivating and the audio is superb. The inflection in his voice with was different for each character and gives them so much life.
10/10 story.
10/10 audio
10/10 satisfaction
Can't wait to start the next one. :)

Good start to a series.

The story is pretty good. A little super fantastical sometimes, but interesting story and lead character.

Loved it!

It's a realm of sword and sorcery where everything is believable. Magic seems in short supply, and the makings of some serious intrigue.

Good not great but better than most

There seems to be several different ideals of how books should be. Some ppl want books to be innocent but we live in the world of school shooting, Trump, opium addiction and teen pregnancy. So how innocent can you be in this world. Saying that to say that this book had mature themes as it advanced. But it was handled appropriate and the story flowed. The MC powers increase and so did his standing in society. It all seemed natural.
But I won't be continuing the series because after the first book there is no world building.

Similar to another Novel

Similar to another Novel but not bad overall. more YA than full blown epic fantasy but a decent read overall

Liked it a lot!

The story was good and fast paced, not
complicated. I like the fact that the names
are simple and easy to remember) for
English speakers. Not a lot of x,Ys and added
to make it sound foreign.
