Publisher's summary

How does the disappearance of 19 high school baseball players remain a mystery for 30 years?

Angel Blondeaux had been taught since birth to never betray family, only to escape the clutches of home to become an FBI agent. For generations, Blondeaux has been the name to respect in Moreau Parish and the name to fear. Crime is no longer a part of life, but a lifestyle woven into the fabric of the parish. So, when Angel Blondeaux had graduated Quantico, she was rejected by the family like a bad organ.

The matriarch of the Blondeaux clan is Angel's grandmother Paulette. Paulette's successor was to be Angel's aunt Lorna, until her mysterious death places the role of heir up for grabs. The FBI forces Angel to return home for her aunt's funeral, only to discover a new will has been drafted, leaving Angel the house and an immense plot of land, along with the buried secrets of the missing baseball players.

5 stars book & narration

Thank you very much to the author for the audiobook giveaway code in exchange for a fair review.

This book begins in a flashback 30 years in the past and the rest of the book colors in the details.

The writing is exceptionally tight, every word serves a purpose. The principle characters, including the Louisiana county, where much of the action occurs, which is also a character, are all well developed, each with an agenda; at least one agenda.

I read a lot of murder mystery and suspense, so I anticipated a couple of the plot twists. There are so many surprises in this book, I didn't mind (though the two times I was yelling at my speakers "look in the ..., look in the ...!"). I actually think the obvious clues made the surprises that much more appealing.

The chase sequence was fun, and between that and the dark drama, this would make an excellent mini-series (are you reading this Netflix???).

There is a trigger warning, but I don't like giving away plot. It is alluded to and talked about, but nothing graphic happens "on screen".

Though I have family in West Virginia, I am not familiar with the Louisiana twang and dialects. Having said that, I found the narration by Stephanie Lewis spot on in tone, interpretation, and pacing.

E.J. Findorff is now on my list of favorite modern writers.

SERIOUS Family Issues

Angel is an FBI Agent but her family is a organized crime syndicate. On a trip home to hear her Aunt's will, she becomes the center of attention, and that's not a good thing. As the bodies begin dropping, she searches for answers to secrets long buried. It's not a pretty picture, but Family seldom is... Highly recommended.

convoluted family drama

This is the story of a family who is accustomed to power and will go to any extremes to keep that power. Angel, who was born into this family, but no fan of their behavior, has moved to New Orleans where she works for the FBI. Her family has great power, but Angel is assigned the task of bringing them to justice; as awkard and dangerous as this she able to unveil a trove of family secrets which are hard for her to reconcile.

Stephanie Lewis is as a terrific reader as E.J, Findorff is a writer. I gave the reader 5 stars, inspite of the several times that the tape is messy in spots and not properly edited. Stephanie has a wide range of voice intonations and variations making her just superb as a reader.

E.J. Findorff writes well, you know the characters as well as you might if you were there in the action. You can visualize where they are and feel as though, given the chance, you could find the exact place where the action takes place.

If you love a mystery, fast moving action and excellent characters, you will like this audiobook. I highly recommend it.
