Critic reviews

"Philip Carlson was my 'guide in shining armor!' Smart, honest and hardworking, this book is his thinking and experience on a shelf." (Idris Elba)
"I was so fortunate to have found Philip when I did. I can't imagine a better introduction to the world of acting and the business of getting there." (Liev Schreiber)
"Philip Carlson is one of the wisest people on the subject of building a career that will last. Luck didn't have him representing New York's top character actors; wisdom, intelligence, patience and loyalty did. He was, and is, as good as it gets." (Tim Blake Nelson)

So much helpful inside knowledge!

I loved this audio book! It was like sitting with an uncle who’s a grand storyteller and the stories are relevant and helpful and oh so fun to hear! As a veteran actor I “knew” a lot of the information — but still I learned a lot and hearing information from the horse’s mouth, as it were, was a theatrical and satisfying experience.

I loved this! Thank you. The mistakes and the heartaches avoided... as well as the money that this has helped me save in advance, has just advanced my career.
I can't wait to listen again

Very informative and helpful

Lots of great information for young and old actors. Great tips and insight into the actor side of the business as well as what is expected from actors. Carlson is blunt but not harsh with his perspective and advice. Book is more for actors in New York but the information also translates to LA, Chicago. etc... worth a listen!

Straightforward & inspiring

Some of the information was contradictory; but in the way that real life is a contradiction. Dream big, work hard, but be realistic and practical in your approach and see what happens…

I can get behind that.

All in all, trust your instincts both in business and in craft, plan your moves but be flexible, and remember your why. If you love to act than focus on acting and figuring out the best way to do that as much as possible.

Great read even for a non-beginner

I wish I would have read this five years ago! But wow! What a gracefully straightforward way to put all this information. This book has turned my mentality upside down and has become the catalyst for a shift in career mindset. Thank you Philip for this wonderful book, and the love you put into it.
