Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England. It’s the sort of place where doctors and lawyers and old-money academics live. It’s not the sort of place where people get stabbed in the back 30 times with a kitchen knife in their own homes. Someone must have seen something. Newlywed Joey Mullen, for example, recently returned from four years of working in Ibiza. She and her husband, Alfie, are eager to find a place of their own in her hometown. But Joey finds herself distracted by the man next door, Tom Fitzwilliam.

Story
Alan Gregory is a clinical psychologist with a thriving practice in Boulder, Colorado. His life begins to unravel when one of his female patients is found in an apparent suicide and the local paper begins printing accusations from an unnamed source of sexual impropriety between the woman and Dr. Gregory. He launches a psychological and personal quest for the truth that rapidly intensifies when more of his patients die untimely deaths, and Gregory suspects not only that the deaths are related but that another one of his patients may be somehow involved. Lacking facts but roused by suspicion and troubled by seemingly random acts of terror around him, Gregory starts to fear for the safety of the people he loves. The question of the inviolability of confidential disclosures made to Gregory by his patients - privileged information - becomes crucial as the psychologist pursues an unsettling romance with Lauren Crowder, a lovely deputy district attorney investigating one of the deaths. Bound to silence, Gregory follows the psychological tracks of someone he fears may be a cunning and disturbed killer, while turning to his enigmatic but supportive partner, Diane Estevez, for counsel, and to his tart-tongued female urologist neighbor for support. The sinister, surprising drama unfolds against Boulder's Rocky Mountain backdrop, in the arresting natural beauty of Aspen, and in the midst of a baroque Halloween costume party in downtown Boulder. Finally, in a lonely mountain lodge enshrouded in menace, the story comes to its breathtaking climax.

Good book, great narration. Not my favorite from kem nunn.
This book is good, but the plot starts to feel pointless and you kinda start to hate the main character. Books like Dogs of winter have characters that are very fleshed out, and striking. So this book was enjoyable , but a bit of a disappointment

DERIVATIVES OF CHANCE
Kem Nunn’s book is a novel about derivatives of Chance; he suggests chance is an integral part of human’ nature. There is chance in genetics, in living, in parenting, in love, in health, in death. Nunn creates a story about the inadvertent nature of life. The main character of Nunn’s book—wait for it—is Dr. Chance.
Nunn’s characters seem formulaic in the beginning but, as the story unfolds, they become unique. Chance is born into wealth, with intelligent parents that can support him through the expense of a great education. Chance is a spoiled product of an abundant life. In his early career, he falls into an ethical dilemma that nearly destroys his reputation and drives his parents to despair. In mid-life, Chance repeats his mistakes with another ethical dilemma; another broken family.
Here we have a questionably ethical psychiatrist, a highly skilled and intelligent survivalist, a beautiful woman, and a bad cop. What could possibly go wrong? Chance is an entertaining story; expertly narrated by Adam Verner.

Disappointing
I love Hugh Laurie so when I saw that he is in a new show on Hulu this season, I got very excited. I then learned that the TV show "Chance" is based on this book and I thought it would be a good idea to read it before watching the show. Well, this book is not intruiging, suspenseful , or the least bit interesting. It is all over the map and you never really quite figure out what the hell the story is about. Unless they have completely recreated the story for the TV show, I cannot see myself watching it, even with Hugh Laurie.

but I think I hated this book. Narrator was kind of dull and story was at times hard to follow. some occasional laughs, but didn't quite care enough about any characters.
