About this listen

High school star athlete Colin Kaepernick is at a crossroads in life. Heavily scouted by colleges and MLB, he has a bright future ahead of him as a highly touted baseball pitcher. Everyone—from his parents to his teachers and coaches—is in agreement about his seemingly clear path. Except Colin feels differently.

Colin isn’t excited about baseball. In the words of five-time all-star MLB player Adam Jones, “Baseball is a White man’s game.” Colin looks up to athletes like Allen Iverson: talented, hyper-competitive, unapologetically Black, and dominating their sports while staying true to themselves. College football looks a lot more fun than sleeping on hotel room floors in the minor leagues of baseball. But Colin doesn't have a single scholarship offer to play football. Yet.

Change the Game is an audio adaptation of celebrated athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick’s YA graphic memoir, where he looks back on a pivotal decision he faced as a baseball pitcher during his senior year of high school. Narrated by Colin Kaepernick, this audiobook features a stellar cast including Jaden Michael (Colin in Black and White).

This touching story explores how a young change-maker learned to find himself and never compromise. How the right decision is rarely the easy one, but taking the road less traveled can make all the difference in the world.

Finding Yourself

Colin writes an interesting story of growing up black while he faces the decisions of a future in baseball or football beginning in college. It took me a while to catch on because his life was very different than mine. But I’m glad I kept listening to the audio book because it is well done and it’s a good story and I learned a lot.

Very Interesting!

I story is a very good one for those of us with color in different environments. I think that he explains the journey very nicely and he clearly expressed the desire to be independent and not held back.

Expect the Unexpected

Although I watched the television documentary, this book added some unexpected turns. The narrations were good but most importantly, this book shed some light on somethings that I didn't understand; the struggles of muli-racial identity as well as being raised by families unlike oneself. Very nicely done.

Interesting

Wasn't what I expected. I didn't know what this short Audible was going to be. But there's definitely a message here. Cool that Colin shared some life experiences when he was a teenager. Showing some of the challenges that many people go through. Let's see if there will be more.

A different perspective

I liked getting to know Colin. I'm glad he found his voice and he was able to form connections with who he is. He remained steady about what he believes in.
