Life at Flint Hill Elementary School may seem normal, but seven friends find themselves on a path to crack the code for an epic life. Whether they're chasing their dreams on stage, searching for an elusive monster fish, or running a makeshift business out of a tree house, can these heroes find a way to work together to change their community?

  • Features diverse girl and boy characters with seven short stories that culminate in a clever twist
  • Perfect for car commutes and road trips with children ages eight to 10 (third, fourth, and fifth grade).
  • Also great as a bedtime listen-along for kids age six to eight who are ready for chapter books (first, second, and third grade)
  • Narrated by two engaging professional voice actors, Michael Mola and Erin Batemen

Best for kids who:

  • Adore realistic fiction, humor, and tall-tale flair
  • Enjoy stories about friendship, family, and school life
  • Can identify with characters who love animals like dogs, cats, and baby chicks; enjoy singing, drawing, acting, playing sports, the great outdoors, and even running makeshift businesses on the side!
  • Can relate to situations like wanting something badly, but not being able to get it; feeling overshadowed or bullied by other kids at school; struggling with household chores like cleaning one's room; and longing to pursue one's dreams
  • Have outgrown Junie B. Jones and Cowgirl Kate and are ready for more advanced chapter books and series books like Judy Moody, Stink, Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Princess in Black, Never Girls, American Girl, Boxcar Children, Magic Treehouse, Geronimo Stilton, and anything for this age group by James Patterson, Kate Dicamillo, Katherine Applegate, Beverly Cleary, or Roald Dahl.

Critic reviews

"This is a book with great lessons for young readers and most grownups will feel strong resonances as they move from one story to the next and from one character to the next. The plot in each story is ingeniously done and each story has its climax and a satisfactory conclusion. Character handling is impeccable and the writing is tight and suitable for young readers. From the thematic development to the realism infused into the stories, Code 7: Cracking the Code for an Epic Life is a work that is exciting and that engages the reader right away. The narrator did an awesome job and the audio doesn’t fail to capture the excitement of the story, the strong drama, and the humor that sets it apart.” (Ruffina Oserio for Readers' Favorite)

"Johnson is a purposeful storyteller, and each of his seven tales embodies a different, important characteristic that a successful person should have." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Code 7 engages kids through entertaining stories that reveal important insights about character, integrity, and social responsibility. This book is an inspiration to children who wish to pursue their passions and bring original ideas into the world." (Adam Grant Wharton, Professor, New York Times best-selling author)

"Code 7 is a staple for every school library and a valuable resource for educators who wish to grow motivated and socially responsible citizens in the classroom. Fun, vivid, and easy to read, this book is about understanding your passions, choosing a project that inspires you, and applying that to those who might need a helping hand. How can one possibly go wrong with that?" (Charles Best, CEO, DonorsChoose.org)

"Every chapter offers a complete vignette from each fifth grader's point of view, and a satisfying conclusion. The last chapter brings all six characters together for one final tale. Readers will enjoy these stories involving a diverse group of likeable children who find themselves in funny (and most likely, familiar) situations. Educators and parents will appreciate the life lessons of caring, having a strong work ethic, and embracing teamwork that are so important during a child's formative years. A supplemental website provides a downloadable discussion guide and activity book that can be used to further enhance character education curricula. VERDICT Even if the book is purchased as a stand-alone title without using the website, it will be a suitable addition to any school library that is looking for short but fast-paced stories that reinforce pro-social behavior." (School Library Journal)

not ideal for adults

I thought that a friend had recommended this to me as a life hack guide, having listened to a few chapters, it became evident that this is for children or young adults.

Boring stories about nothing

I don’t know why this book was made. I guess I should’ve paid more attention to what I was listening to.
