About this listen
Did you know that the first English settlement in the New World was a disaster?
Perhaps you have heard the story of Roanoke before. Or maybe even the creation of Jamestown. But have you heard about the Spanish colonies in North America? Or the French and Dutch settlements?
Colonial America was diverse, with European settlers from various nations coming to the New World and meeting the Native Americans who already inhabited the land. What were their interactions like? Was there any semblance of peace between all of the groups who called this land their home?
This audiobook will examine that in more detail, as well as a closer look at how some of the major British colonies were formed. The current-day United States owes its heritage to all of the people who moved or already lived there, but Britain perhaps had the greatest influence. After all, even today, Americans celebrate their independence from Great Britain.
So, what are you waiting for? Dive into this exciting period of history, and learn more about how the United States became what it is today. In this audiobook, you will discover:
- The early days of the Age of Discovery and the European navigators who opened the world to colonization
- The rivalries that took place among England, France, and Spain
- The role of religion and how it played a factor in colonization
- The establishment of the Thirteen Colonies
- A closer look at New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, including their origins and how they prospered
- How life in the colonies differs from the modern day
- The roles the Founding Fathers played and a brief look at the road to the American Revolution
- And so much more!

In fact, of the 102 passengers on the Mayflower, only about 40 were fleeing England for religious reasons. And if you want to learn more fascinating facts about this cultural icon, pay attention.... The Reformation brought sweeping changes across Europe. In England, that led to the formation of a small congregation of radicals known as the Separatists. These were ordinary farmers and craftsmen who simply didn’t believe in the Anglican Church, and they found themselves hounded out of their own country like criminals.

Cleopatra was a descendant of Ptolemy I Soter, a general who served the legendary Macedonian king Alexander the Great. She reigned over Egypt for nearly 21 years, and she first stepped onto the throne when she was just 18 years old. Story
Based on his early achievements, Aaron Burr, Jr., should have become an obscure but respected figure in American history. An officer in the Continental Army, a high-flying lawyer, and an influential politician, his career peak was becoming the third vice president in US history. But after all these achievements, Burr's name is now associated with corruption and cruelty. He killed a man in an illegal duel while in office, and interest in that man, Alexander Hamilton, has revived Burr's reputation as one of history's villains. Who was Aaron Burr?

Although one can speak of Thomas Jefferson in a tediously factual way, he was an enigma. Historically, he is noted for writing the Declaration of Independence, which was a daring and courageous statement of the rights of Americans and, indeed, of all people. Hidden beneath the many cloaks of legalistic terminologies that he was fond of using, all the strengths and vulnerabilities of Jefferson as a man were there, too. Like many people of today, he had a difficult childhood. He also liked to party while in college and loved to play the fiddle.

Few historical events are as greatly revered and entirely misunderstood as the French Revolution that began in 1789. The memory of this complicated and lengthy political, violent uprising has been generally painted in broad - and oversimplified - strokes. While the French Revolution was certainly centered around two lavish monarchs and an enlightened common class, there was so much more going on behind the scenes.

A good overview of the Colonial American period
Even though I'm very familiar with this period in history, the audiobook did provide some new and interesting information that I had not known before. It was told in various, engaging segments that were easy to follow. While there was much information about the native peoples, I wish there was more stories the interactions between the various indigenous peoples and the European colonizers.
Colin Fluxman does a very good job presenting the material and not distracting from the story but allowing the story to shine.
