Publisher's summary

Nothing's as fun as other people's secrets.

A regency romp both on and off the London stage.

Laura Edwards, a French émigré fallen on hard times, took to the stage to support her brother's medical career. Now that he's established, he wants her to turn respectable, landing her in the country hiding in plain sight from one of her biggest admirers, Jasper Rushford, the care-for-nothing son of the local viscount. He just might have recognized her...

Sorry it’s the last in the series!

I really hope the author writes another book for this series, but I can’t guess which character she would pick. I hope to find out!

Witty and entertaining!

I’ve read 3 books in this series and enjoyed all! I particularly enjoy the character of Jasper, and find the narrator does a great job with both male and female voices! Each novel has a very unique plot. I was so glad that this story pulled the family characters from the first two books back together again and still added new characters. Both of the lead characters in this book are quick and witty and made this very entertaining to listen to!

A Lovely Story

I truly enjoyed this installment of the series. I was wondering what would become of Jasper. *Sigh*....

Better than I Thought

Going into it, I wasn’t sure I would be able to get past the first few chapters. As much as I love Lucy Paterson’s narration, she gave Jasper a nasal, weasley voice, and he was written as an overgrown child in the previous two books. I didn’t think I could see him as a romantic lead. I did finish this book and the story wasn’t all that bad. It is a bit convoluted in places, and begs for whatever it can get to patch the large holes in the story. Sometimes it settles on confusion to get the job done. At least it isn’t half-hearted about it - it blatantly steps into the quicksand and smiles as it sinks. I forgave and forgot and moved on. Much easier than trying to untangle the hopeless ball of yarn. I think the author and the narrator both like Jasper the best. They give him a spiffy intelligence and he can run circles around everyone else. That was the fun part. He is quite creative. I did not like the leading lady. At all. He deserved far, far better than the self-inflated egomania she relishes. She is horribly flawed and she wallows in that fact like it is a high honor.

Great story

I loved this book! The only thing that would’ve made it better would be if the narrator could distinguish her voice more between the two leads. I sometimes confused Jasper and Laura’s lines.

A la Georgette Heyer

A beautiful love story with compelling characters who are truly likable. Reminded me of Georgette Heyer without being an exact replica. The style of writing is poetic and displays a level of real talent seldom found in a typical romance. I loved this entire trilogy.

Engaging Series

I enjoyed all three books in this series and I was sorry to see it end. The stories are rich and the plots have unexpected turns without being too predictable or confusing, though in Regency romances, the outcomes are generally foregone conclusions. The characters are complex and you find yourself really hoping for their ultimate good fortune. I love this great work from both the narrator and the author.

Enjoyable Romance!

I really enjoyed the tale of romance, in this book, without unnecessary sex scenes. The characters were believable, and the last chapters were very exciting. The narrator’s male voices didn’t work well, in my opinion. However, her overall performance was good.

Very Regency, Very Sweet

The writing was good, the plot was fun and Jaima Fixsen put together the storylines like a puzzle — it wasn’t just the same old plot, but had new elements and an interesting and original heroine. There was an inexplicable obstacle I didn’t buy near the end — parents treating a 27-year-old man like a teenager — but I ignored that part . I really enjoyed this and Lucy Paterson read it very well, giving the characters their own distinct voices.

An instant favorite

I love this story. Many wonderful gothic references and so much fun. As a theatermaker, this story was extra fun for me.

I only had one historical quibble, I wish they hadn't had whistling in the theater. Whistling would have been spectacularly dangerous and everyone would have stopped him right away. Communication by the stage hands was done by whistling before modern headsets and the wrong whistle could bring scenery crashing down on your head. To this day, theatrical types are nervous when someone whistles in a theater. I started working in theater in the year 2000, many generations after the last whistled cue, and I was still vehemently warned against it and told that it was bad luck.
