About this listen

Leviathan

From debut fantasy author D.G. MacRath, Leviathan is the first part of the Gloaming trilogy. Set in the Scotland-inspired Realm, MacRath begins his tale of broken heroes, rich mythology, and brutal civil war.

A generation after a bloody civil war, Mata rules as Prince Regent. Shorn of the Crown’s authority, he wrestles to maintain an uneasy peace among his people. Will his choices maintain order or send the Realm spiraling toward yet more vicious bloodshed?

About the author: D.G. MacRath was born and raised in Scotland. He draws heavily from the country’s mythology, landscape, and culture to build remarkable fantasy worlds that lure readers in. In his other life, he is a staff writer for a storytelling agency.

Brutal lessons

This book makes you wonder what people are truly capable of doing and thinking. Brutal lessons taught but not learned. I enjoyed the book and the narration.

Not what I expected

I think I was expecting more of a fantasy adventure. And although there are elements of that here, it fits in more with, say, stories of King Arthur. There are moments where there were intense battles, but most of the conflict was internal. My first reaction was that I was really not that fond of the story. It seemed somewhat slow, and I just was not getting attached to the characters. But now that I have finished it, I realize there was a depth and an intricate storytelling that I just did not appreciate initially. I think I will be watching for the next, but will also be reading the reviews so I have a better idea what to expect.

I give the story 3 stars because I thought it was pretty good. I liked it, but didn't love it. But the narration was wonderful. I loved the accents and characters.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

A great fictional world based in Scottish lore

Ok so why not 5 stars all around? I have so many books that I’ve rated 5 that I just can’t put this to the same level. Performance wise though was top notch. The story is quite well written though I found myself drifting during some of the slower portions of the book and going back to re listen which is why the four. I am interested in seeing how e world develops. The battle sequences were phenomenal and really re-engage you in the story. If you like historical fiction, epic fantasy, and all things Scottish this is for you. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

Welcome D. G. MacRath

This is the first novel I have read by D. G. MacRath and per his website it is the first one he has published. Therefore, I want to say welcome to list of authors who can write a book good enough to make me want to read the next. And in turn he has welcomed us to a uniquely Scottish fantasy.

Overall I thought the story was well written and interesting. There were good characters that k grew to care about and a interesting story. However, I have the story 4 stars because there were a few changes in the main characters personality that were not explained. I feel like the main character turned a lot darker half way through the book without adequate reasoning. It would have been nice to spend more time in the characters head just experiencing their thoughts. We had plenty of action but rarely did we get an insight into what the main character is was thinking directly following action. The story would just jump to the next action and tell us where the character was emotionally, instead of showing us how they got there. If there would have been more of the proceeding, it would have got 5 stars on story.

The performance by George Ellington was superb. The accents and character voices were varied, personalized, and authentic. The narrator definitely enhanced the story.

It is a good book and I am looking forward to the next.

What an awesome, awesome book!

With rich dialogue and superb description George Ellington brings the characters and the realm to life. When Motter the The prince region of the realm has to slay a former ally son boy Fraser after what he himself calls a slaughter, he is finding it difficult to keep the peace in his realm. Wanting to do what is right for his people he struggles with the right decision. My favorite thing about this book is that you learn the history of the realm through intertwine dialogue from multiple different characters but mainly the regions best friend Bennett. The one thing he is trying to avoid and that he feels is his number one job is to keep the peace. One of his biggest issues is how to punish boy Fraser’s existing family with the privy Council’s backing, but unfortunately in the first vote he doesn’t get it and one of his biggest opposers is Lenix. Will he be able to solve this issue before this to end up in slaughter? All this and I didn’t even tell you about the voice he hears and the image you see is in the fire. Not to mention his secret religion which he hast to hide because most of the people in the round believe in the old gods and not one true God. He has so much on his plate. This is a great debut novel and I can’t wait for the second book in this fabulous series. Also, I have listen to books before narrated by George Ellington and I must say he is one of my absolute favorites and I can only hope he does the other books in this collection. I think he has an awesome voice and he’s so good at doing multiple characters at once. So kudos to you Mr. Ellington you’re awesome! I highly recommend this book if you’re looking around for something interesting to read just know I read this in one sitting and don’t doubt it just get it. I freaking love this book!
