Publisher's summary

In the Empire, cultivation is restricted. Weapons are forbidden. Tyranny reigns.

When disaster strikes for Oren and his family, there is only one choice: flee the local magistrate and his arrogant son who wants to destroy their family.

But to leave the empire means heading to the north: a land of barbaric tribes and monsters. Oren and his family embark on a long and hard, danger-filled journey to escape the Empire, but politics are at play, and the shadow of the empire is cruel, cold, and long. However, Oren discovers several secrets along the way that will forever change his views on cultivation and power.

Cruel Empire is the first of the Rebel's Path series: an exciting epic progression cultivation fantasy series with stats, a unique leveling system, and plenty of action and adventure. Perfect for fans of Cradle, He Who Fights with Monsters, Azarinth Healer, and Primal Hunter.

Its ok

Not great, but not bad. The MC is a little too dumb and always takes too much time being flabbergasted when confronted by new information. It's like if he's never heard of something before, or if something is different than he expected his brain stops working for a minute or two. Not a hero type for sure, and it's not clear if that's what the writer wants or ot. it just feels off. Honestly I liked everyone else but the MC, and the initial generic evil entitled lordling antagonist that forces the plot. So yeah some serious tropes going on but that's not bad just a little bland. The narration was also meh.

Feels like a translation of a generic web novel

Not a good story. Dialogue is clunky and characters are cookie cutter skip if you don't want a headache.
