Publisher's summary

When the vicious fae king catches Tessa stealing his powerful gemstones, he demands a cruel punishment.

She must leave her family and friends behind and become his future human bride. Tessa has never stepped foot inside the glittering fae city until now—and no mortal is allowed. There, things are far more monstrous than she ever dreamed. King Oberon humiliates her, terrorizes her, and threatens those she loves.

But when she escapes, someone far worse finds her. The lethal Mist King, the enemy fae who trapped her people beneath the reign of King Oberon in the first place. The one who destroyed human cities and watched them burn.

He takes her captive and then offers her a deal: become the first mortal to kill a fae king, and he will free her people. But the mists beyond the kingdom walls are dangerous, ruthless, and mesmerizing…and so is he.

As Tessa fights her growing desire, she must make a choice; her dagger can kill only one fae...which king will it be?

Of Mist and Shadow is the first book in The Mist King series, a captivating and sizzling enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance.

A good start.

I really like the world, the premise and the characters. There were a few places where I didn't feel like the leaps of logic were fleshed out quite well enough but that is forgivable in a first of a series.

I do want to see what happens next and will be watching 👀

The narration is quite good from both.

Loved!

Another great enemies to lovers story! I immediately jumped on the 2nd book in the series....but now I'm bummed to see that the audio hasn't been completed yet for the 3rd. Looking forward to the continuing story.

Irritating female, MC

Tessa sometimes came across like a damsel in distress, and then sometimes like someone that wanted to storm the castle; but very passive in the implementation of doing that. She also came across sometimes as a ‘Princess’ when she’s reading as her mother is working out in the fields; or as she sits around while those supporting her are fighting the monsters. She’s definitely not a take charge kind of person, but does do a lot of hand wringing and making stupid decisions. Sometimes the stupid decisions will pan out for her. I haven’t decided if I will listen to the next book in the series but the story was interesting enough to make me wonder how things will be resolved.

Poor writing, Disappointing character development

This was one of the first books I’ve read in a while where I couldn’t not notice the poor writing and character development. The characters did not develop in a natural relatable way. Much of it was a trauma happening, then one conversation and everything was fine and forgettable. Not much introspection and actual development that should have been there to get past things. This book was to fantasy what reality tv is to real life.

Also, the female narrator does the annoying thing where she has a ridiculous deep voice for the male characters.

I did continue the series to find out what happened, but mainly because I couldn’t look up a synopsis to find out what happened without actually reading them. I would much rather have read a synopsis. I definitely don’t recommend the series.

Good, not great imo

The story is pretty interesting, but besides a little world building I felt like the book got nowhere and ended close to where it started. I am interested enough in the characters to see where it goes, but it just wasn't exciting compared to other books I have read this year. Hoping it picks up in the next book like most series do

Main Character is a Mess

The story was ok overall and the performance very good but the main character is indecisive, whiny. One minute she’s trying to be tough, the next she leaping to conclusions based on little to no evidence. Very frustrating as a reader.

Good

This book started out a little slow, but it picked up quickly. I liked Tessa, but she seemed a little naïve. Tessa manages to flee from one fae king into the clutches of another fae king. She has been lied to so much I can understand why she is having problems trusting anyone. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Great read!

It’s hard finding something to satisfy that good story itch when you’re starting to wonder if you’ve read or listened to everything in your area of interest. And harder when so many of the books are so similar in story and tropes that they are almost interchangeable. Thankfully, I stumbled across this book. Although, at least for me, some things in the story are predictable. Or maybe purposely come off that way so you internally want to beg the main character to not do something? Who knows. This book is full of domineering fae, rebellious humans, questionable horses, monsters, misunderstandings, unadvantageous marriages, misuse of valerian root, and a good pinch of spice. I could do with more spice. But maybe in the next book?

Very enjoyable!

This was a fun listen! I enjoyed the world Jenna Wolfhart built for us and I'm interested to see how more fleshed out it becomes in the next book. The narrators did a fantastic job. I'm not a huge fan of fae, but I gave this one a chance because the premise sounded more unique than other fae stories.

Overall, I am excited to get the next book when it comes out!

Spoilers beyond this point!!
Tessa is stubborn and suspicious, though I can understand why considering how she's had to live her life under the king's rule. She can be pretty impulsive which is sometimes frustrating to listen to because I scream at my audiobook for her to just chill out and think things through a little more. Kalen's parts were short and I wish I could have heard more from his POV because he and his backstory are so mysterious that I needed to feel more of a connection to him. His ability to visit dreams was fun. I enjoyed the dream sequences a lot and also liked the section of the story where the storm trapped them in that castle. I'm interested to see how Tessa's betrayal to Kalen is going to effect the dynamic between them and I'm excited, and hopeful, for a larger part in the story for Morgan since Tessa and her friend and family are now in the fae city dungeons.

Some plot things I didn't like were the "Oh, her sister isn't dead after all!" thing. It kind of felt like the author had another plot point to make in the second book and needed the sister to be involved, so she essentially brought her back from the dead. I wish authors would feel more comfortable killing off the MC's loved one because I would have liked her sister's death to continue to be a driving force. Midnight being a crazy strong creature out of nowhere was a twist I wasn't expecting and I wasn't a huge fan of it, especially since he essentially (possibly) dies shortly after taking on his true form. The last two hours of the book felt super rushed, like the author was thinking, "I really need to wrap this up so I can work on the second book."

I hope all of the questions I have will be answered in the next couple books. If the author reads this, this is my first book I've listened to by you and it definitely makes me want to look into your other work. I will definitely give this one a relisten to see if I've missed anything.
