About this listen

Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was an Italian poet, philosopher, and political thinker, widely regarded as the father of the Italian language.

Born in Florence, Dante’s early life was shaped by intense political strife and personal loss, including the death of his muse, Beatrice Portinari, who inspired much of his work. His literary masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, is a monumental epic that journeys through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio), and Paradise (Paradiso), exploring themes of redemption, divine justice, and human destiny.

Written in vernacular Italian, the work revolutionized literature and cemented Dante's place as one of history’s greatest writers.

Exiled from Florence due to political conflicts, he spent his final years in Ravenna, where he completed The Divine Comedy and left a legacy that continues to inspire the world.
