Publisher's summary

Bury your secrets. Bury them deep....

A month after her high school graduation, small-town girl Samantha "Sam" Bronwyn boards a plane with her best friend, Ginny. Destination: San Francisco. But when Ginny disappears inside an airport bathroom wearing Sam's letterman jacket, it doesn't take her long to figure out she was the intended target. Alone in a strange city, Sam's on a run for her life - drawn into a dark past she never knew existed. A past where secrets aren't all that's buried and where revenge comes at the highest price.

Who is Sam really - and who can she trust? The mysterious stranger in 4A who secreted a gun in his backpack? The guilty ex-con? The disarming FBI agent? Her own mother?

Only one thing is certain. Someone is after her. Someone who knows more about her than she does. Someone who wants to teach her a hard lesson: There are worse things than murder.

Daddy Darkest is a standalone and the first in the Doctors of Darkness series.

Will keep an eye out for this new author

The story and narrator was wonderful. the only thing I would suggest is when skipping from past to present to acknowledge it. say Claire etc. was hard to follow sometimes.

Mind boggling

A brilliant psychiatrist is seduced and falls in love with a serial killer, who's also her patient (and an inmate). When it comes to rape victims (especially minors) it's almost impossible to turn them into unsympathetic characters. Somehow that mission is accomplished with the primary character of this story. I feel awful for what she went through as an adolescent, but the decisions she makes as a practicing psychiatrist and alleged professional cause some of the sympathy to evaporate to the point you really don't care about her fate by the end of the book. The loss of sympathy is primarily because she turns her back on the people in her life who genuinely care about her in favor of screwing a murderer just because he's got nice eyes and sweet talks her. I was married to a woman who was the victim of rape as a child and this character does a disservice to victims who actually turn out to not be hell bent on self destruction.

Painful

I’m not sure why I didn’t make the dr connection but the story synopsis and the actual book seem off. It is always difficult to listen to a book about about your profession in a negative way but Claire wins 1st prize for breaking every ethical and moral code. Clearly she has never recovered from her own trauma and she is susceptible herself but the whole book is a sh&t show. Not sure if I’ll continue with the series.

Narration was good with what she had.

Good Story in the beginning but crash and burns

I really don't know if I can continue this story any more, I am so ready to hang a sign on this woman that says open 24/7 her morals are lacking and now this part of the book is just all about her conquests and serious mental issues. The unbelievably of the story is too much to handle and if I hear her best friend call her Claire Bear one more time I will throw my phone across the room!. What a great start for a book to just crash and burn in the middle it is almost painful and drawn out to continue to listen to. I like a good mystery thriller with a kick of romance, but when you have so many men involved it is really hard to follow. Keep on trying Ellery you have the potential but this one is just too drawn out for me.
