About this listen

Have you ever wondered why you feel exhausted and frustrated when gathering with certain family members?

Often, we may encounter unpleasant relatives who drain our energy by bringing negativity and sabotage to our moments of joy, plans, or life perspective. But there is always a reason behind their attitudes, which we will dig into here. Plus, you will understand how these relatives affect your life.

As you go through this book, you will be able to wisely bring closure, not to those toxic relationships but to your frustration, and give yourself the space to love those family members from a fair distance without disrespect or harmful conflicts.

The purpose of this book is not to create more wounds, but to heal and close the open ones.

Also, you will learn how to create greater confidence, self-love, empathy, and resilience in a fundamental process to change your days for the better:

  • Understand the six main reasons why people choose to stay in a toxic and abusive relationship.
  • Find the principal causes of conscious and unconscious self-destruction triggered by toxic family members.
  • 28 examples to help you discover how to recognize toxic behaviors and what exactly a toxic person is.
  • Enhance your life perspective about your family relationship with the "five weeks method" exercise.
  • Discover what to do if you can’t avoid their presence, and maintain your peace and confidence.
  • Discover how to mindfully deal with it when you desperately need to cut off ties.

Love this book in a sense that it shows you how to have a relationship in respectful manner from far distance and not to terminate all together. In many countries it is a norm to be toxic people. This book will be very helpful for those people who are stuck in toxic relationship and doesn't know what options they have to fix it. Helpful For Mental Health

I have a close family member that seems to be always unhappy, and finds reasons to complain or argue with other family members only it seems. I think that she does this because she wants us to feel her pain, or to be unhappy too. I'm not really sure why but she does her best to ruin my mood, day, and week almost every time I speak with her. We actually argued about a haircut I didn't like recently. The length didn't consider that my curls would lift the hair, and it wasn't layered so ultimately, it wasn't close to what I asked for. Yet because I didn't explain how much my hair lifts because of curls, it seems to be my fault that I don't like my cut. This became such an argument that we cut our conversation short because she began to find other reasons to argue.

I'm not going to give you other stories because if you're reading this, you have someone in your life that does this to you too. Bottom line is I feel the chapter "should I stay, or should I go" helped me to understand that I need to emotionally detach myself from her if I want her to be in my life at all. She's family, and I love her, even though I wouldn't have her as a friend. So if I want her in my life, I need to be the one who changes because she will not. So I won't ever offer advice unless I'm asked, nor will I give any opinions, and this will reduce the conflict, and when there is conflict, emotional detachment should help me manage my emotions.

There is much more helpful tips, that now has given me a plan to deal with this person so that it's not destructive to my mental health. If you have a toxic family member, give this book a try.

Much Neeeded Book

I'm glad that this book teaches and discusses a difficult topic for many. Family can bring you up or down. Often it is hard to set boundaries because parents will still see you as a child and not respect boundaries. The steps help you address those issues.

Valuable

Bought this as relations with my family have become increasingly toxic with COVID in recent years, and while I go back and forth with wanting to cut them out completely, this book helped me establish a healthy middle ground in communicating with them. Plan on referring back to, and definitely would recommend to anyone in a similar scenario!

Pithy, unpatronizing, easily understood advice

I enjoyed this book. It does not drag on and on. It cuts straight through to the point, and leaves with clean edges too, no ambiguities or wishy washiness. I felt understood and acknowledged, and it’s easy for me to understand what exactly he advised me to do. There’s no ambiguity in the actions that he advised. These actions are also completely within my ability to do, should I choose to do them. It’s a good book.

An engrossing narrative, with many helpful tips!

This book should be helpful for anyone who has an overwhelmingly negative person in the family. I particularly liked the chapter on how to stop that toxic family member from "dumping on" you, which could apply just as well to bad acquaintances and co-workers. Of nearly equal value are the many tips for getting through dreaded family events and gatherings. (The author also explains when you would be better off simply leaving). But there is ample understanding for the "problem" family member expressed here, too. This includes a detailed explanation of why the patterns of emotional abuse often are repeated by the abused adult, and how to express some empathy and understanding for that poor soul who is plaguing your very existence. Yet ultimately the author makes it clear there are limits to how much mistreatment anyone can and must endure. He concludes there are situations in which is better to simply cut ties with that most toxic relative.

Very Helpful

We are dealing with toxic family members right now in our life. I love how this book teaches love, forgiveness, kindness, understanding, and compassion in dealing with toxic family members. We have chosen to give ourselves space from these family members for right now, but I appreciate the concept of leaving the door open for the possibility of reconciliation. I appreciated hearing the author's personal stories in the book. Every family could benefit from reading this book and implementing its ideas. Very well done. 5 stars!
