Publisher's summary

Warning: Shock and outrage will grip you as you dive into this one-of-a-kind exposé. Shoddy science, sketchy politics, and shady special interests have shaped American Dietary recommendations - and destroyed our nation's health - over recent decades. The phrase "Death by Food Pyramid" isn't shock-value sensationalism, but the tragic consequence of following federal advice and corporate manipulation in pursuit of health.

In Death by Food Pyramid, Denise Minger exposes the forces that overrode common sense and solid science to launch a pyramid phenomenon that bled far beyond US borders to taint the eating habits of the entire developed world.

Minger explores how generations of flawed pyramids and plates endure as part of the national consciousness, and how the "one size fits all" diet mentality these icons convey pushes us deeper into the throes of obesity and disease. Regardless of whether you're an omnivore or vegan, research junkie or science-phobe, health novice or seasoned dieter, Death by Food Pyramid will reframe your understanding of nutrition science - and inspire you to take your health, and your future, into your own hands.

Humorous look at history and science of nutition

Would you listen to Death by Food Pyramid again? Why?

Not likely, simply because of the monotone narration.

What did you like best about this story?

Denise Minger's well-reasoned writing and her willingness to help people understand what she is conveying about nutrition and the science (or lack thereof) behind it was definitely breath of fresh air compared to other recent releases.

Would you listen to another book narrated by David Minger?

I'm sure the narrator is an intelligent and lovely person but, no.

Good Info

I had no prob with the narrator. Sure he had an accent, but it wasn't bad. I also listened to the book at 1.5 speed. Maybe that helped.

Can't stand the narrator

I find myself disliking the great content of this book because of the narrator. His accent is very distracting and unattractive.

Terrific material made taxing by poor narration

I think the subject matter in this book is excellent. It's a well formulated discussion about how we should be thinking about the food we eat and absorbing information from others on that subject. I really think it should be required reading for anyone exploring the subject of health and diets.

However, the narrator of the book lacks qualities of professional narrators. The tone is very encyclopedic. For instance, humor is often read with identical tone and inflection as scientific terminology without any clear consciousness conveyed about the actual material. Basically, this will sound as if a male Siri were reading with a Midwestern accent.

No offense to the performer but I hope this is redone with a veteran audio book narrator.

Great information, horrible narration

Would you listen to Death by Food Pyramid again? Why?

No. The research done for this book is great and the information is very well written. The narration however makes this audio book almost unlistenable. It it flat, there are no pauses between sections, and the sound quality is bad - it almost sounds like someone sitting in their kitchen.

What did you like best about this story?

The well done research.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Minger?

A professional. I think this narrator is the authors dad.

Chore

This is an informational book so I in no way expected it to be entertaining. It is packed full of interesting information. My issue was that the reader is the worst I have encountered, he sounded almost monotone and had a very computer generated type voice...ugh, this made it a HUGE chore to listen to and as a result, took me forever to listen to.

Good book, awful narrator

The content is similar to other current nutrition books, with a few gems. The narrator is awful. I made the mistake of not previewing the narration before I bought.

Good, Not Great...

A thoroughly researched book on, not only the origin of the food pyramid, but nutrition and diets in general. The story is good; what I did not enjoy was the narrator, who was pretty dull. Still, it is a worthwhile listen.
