Publisher's summary
How did a once faceless bureaucrat, a man whose own wife said he was born under the sign of the vampire, become the idealized face of Russian manhood and its authoritarian leader? Deputy Mayor Putin examines the man behind the myth. We will explore how Putin’s formative years shaped and drove him and how the supporting cast of characters he gathered along the way helped him get to the Kremlin’s inner sanctum. We will trace Putin’s many transformations and examine how each step brought him closer to the leader he is today: from scrawny street thug to the aggressive President Putin who invaded Ukraine in early 2022.

Story
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

Forty years ago, following the appointment of their professors to the federal bench, a tiny group of conservative law students at Yale Law School worried that their ideas might disappear from intellectual discourse in this bastion of liberal thought. They set out to fill that void. But they ended up achieving way more than that. Over the next few decades, the Federalist Society became an integral tool in the larger conservative movement, with political, judicial, and social repercussions ending in the conservative capture of the Supreme Court and the election of Donald Trump to the presidency.

Millions of people–looking to cheat on their partners–signed up for Ashley Madison in the early 2000s, seeking a private space to share their public desires. The promise of discretion was shattered in the summer of 2015, when anonymous hackers stole the company’s cache of user information and published it worldwide. The result? One of the most shocking data breaches of the internet age. Overnight, millions of unfaithful spouses had their real names, addresses and sexual preferences published online in a searchable database that anyone could browse.

Vladimir Putin is a paradox. In the early years of his presidency, he appeared to commit himself to friendship with the West, suggesting that Russia could join the European Union or even NATO. He said he supported free-market democracy and civil rights. But the Putin of those years is unrecognisable today. The Putin of the 2020s is an autocratic nationalist, dedicated to repression at home and anti-Western militarism abroad.

Informative, Current and Compelling.
Imagine it is 1939. Nazi Germany has swallowed Austria and Czechoslovakia, made new alliances with Italy and Japan, signed a pact with the USSR, and has started the invasion of Poland.
The greater horrors of World War II are yet to come.
Now imagine hearing a biography-up-to-this-moment of Adolph Hitler. This is what I felt listening to this 2024 podcast. I’m a modestly well informed lay person who is curious about the who and why of Vladimir Putin. This podcast provided both the facts and thd context of his origin, development and unlikely abrupt rise to the height of power in today’s Russia.
Delivered in compact digestible segments, this is a masterful effort by a small dedicated organization. Highly recommended!!!

A Political Grand Master
Although it is a slanted view of a former KGB and FSB chief, this story shows that he, a chess master is pitted against a doddering old fool.

First Binge Book in Ages!
I'm the type of person that will either love or hate a book within the first paragraph. I started this audio book when I started my shift this morning and just finished it in one sitting, so as far as my standards go it was brilliant! Good pace, good readers, great book!

I liked it
It was good, informative, with a good narrator, and a good pace. I enjoyed it. Only I wonder how his wife felt all that time. I still wondering if KGB agents have any say in who they will be married to.

Insightful and layered
McQuillan provides an astoundingly layered story of the compelling mixture of facts and fate that led to Putin's rise to power. The characters and setting pop; exquisite detail and atmosphere linger long after the final sentence.

Learned something
Very good reader, kept my interest. He is as twisted as previously thought, but now I know more of his history - short man with anger issues - must be worshipped.
