Darkness lies closer than you think....
Liana Clymer is running away - from her divorce, from her past, from herself. Leaving behind everything she knows, she finds herself ensconced in a fuchsia-colored cottage in the swampy hinterlands of the Florida panhandle. Far from the grown sons who don't return her calls, her only companion her dog, Liana decides to put her best foot forward and get to know whoever lives in the blue house across the street, the only neighbors within sight of her new home. But minutes after a teenage boy, Justin, answers the door and wins her over with his shy kindness, his face appears on the TV screen and is immediately recognizable as that of the child who was taken from his parents two years ago. Worse, Justin's abductor has no intention of letting Liana go.
A powerful will to live - and to save Justin too - seizes hold of Liana. She will fight tooth and nail to survive. But does she have what it takes to thwart a wily, depraved psychopath for whom abuse is a way of life...and killing is routine?

It is, certainly, not for the faint of heart. The novel deals with the darkest side of people, with real life monsters and the heartbreaking effects they have in innocent lives. It shows how humans are complex creatures, capable of a myriad of apparently conflicting sentiments all at the same time, and how nothing is as easy to identify or understand as good an evil as we would like them to be.
Liana is a splendid character; one of those people you wish you could meet in real life and be friends with. She’s used to being mistreated, ignored, disregarded and still maintain that good—sometimes dark—humor, that sparkle of life, that whimsical way of facing distress. It helps her a lot during her ordeal in this story, and is the key point to survival many times. She is indeed drawn into darkness, but she brings her light with her.
What to say about Justin? He’ll break your heart, you’ll want to hold and protect that boy just as Liana did.
This story is dark but it is also about redemption, about discovery, about not giving up, about finding silver lines to hold on to keep living, to survive and maybe, find happiness again. It’s brilliantly written. The narration is not spectacular but gets the job done in a good way. I’ll certainly read more from this author.
Masterpiece!

The ending wasn't what I had hoped. I wanted to hear more about our heroes, how they dealt with everything, but it wasn't meant to be.
I would still recommend this to anyone who has a sense of humor and can understand a mother's love.
It drew me in

This book is about a woman, with two grown sons, newly divorced who moves to a very rural area, goes to meet her closest neighbor, finds out he is a pedophile who has kidnapped a child and then gets kidnapped herself by said pedophile. The author then drags this story out way beyond the plot she has assigned to it. It could have been interesting enough for 10 hrs but the plot that this author uses just isn't good enough for 10 hrs. Maybe she's getting paid by the word or something so she's trying to make the book longer than it really needs to be. I've noticed that w/ a lot of books lately; authors dragging out books unnecessarily. They must have cut out the job of the editor what w/ self publishing.
Too long

The main character was unlikable. She had no spine yet n apparent big mouth. Even her big mouth scenes were mousy. Maybe this was just how the character was written but as a woman, it would have been nice to make her more of a hero and not someone just getting stepped on.
The fact that she catered to her capture even when he was at the brink of death really aggravated me.
As for Justin, I felt awful for him but even when he was supposed to have a strong reaction, the narrator spoke in the same monotone.
If I was he author, if never us this narrator again.
Annoying Narrator!!!
